Job Overview

The Senior Process Engineer plays a critical technical and strategic role within ESI, working collaboratively with senior engineers, project managers, and O&M teams to advance the company’s biogas utilization projects. This position requires a high level of engineering expertise, sound judgment, and the ability to translate complex process concepts into practical, high‑performance system designs. The Senior Process Engineer is expected to operate with significant independence, demonstrate strong initiative, and communicate effectively across multidisciplinary teams. In addition to delivering high‑quality engineering work, the Senior Process Engineer will provide informed, proactive feedback to department leadership on opportunities to optimize processes, enhance system reliability, and strengthen design standards across the organization.

Reports To

The Senior Process Engineer will report to the Mechanical Engineering and CAD Lead.

Work Location

This is an in‑person position based in either Sisters, OR (Headquarters) or Denver, CO (Satellite Office). Limited remote work may be approved at the discretion of the department lead, depending on business needs. Employees based in Denver are required to travel to the Sisters, OR headquarters at least quarterly.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Serve as a senior technical expert in process engineering, providing high‑level support for project development and execution across engineering services and EPC projects in the company’s various end markets.
  • Drive effective communication and collaboration across engineering disciplines by proactively coordinating design interfaces, sharing technical insights, and ensuring alignment on process requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Identify gaps in process design approaches, tools, and resources, and recommend improvements to department leadership to enhance efficiency, technical rigor, and project execution quality.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior and mid‑level engineers, supporting their development through knowledge sharing, design reviews, and constructive feedback.
  • Prepare complex engineering drawings and documentation for permitting, estimating, bidding, and construction, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and compliance with project and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead the development and review of key process engineering deliverables, including Project Design Basis documents, Block Flow Diagrams (BFDs), Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), equipment specifications, data sheets, and Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs). Develop control philosophies and cause‑and‑effect charts for advanced process systems.
  • Participate as a senior technical contributor in project HAZOP and other process safety reviews, offering expert insight into process hazards, operability concerns, and mitigation strategies.
  • Perform and validate advanced engineering calculations, including material and energy balances; valve, tank, and vessel sizing; heat exchanger, pump, and compressor sizing; and piping, control, and relief valve sizing.
  • Support the review and resolution of contractor RFIs, providing clear, technically sound responses that maintain design intent and project requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with ESI’s Operations Division to troubleshoot process issues, optimize system performance, and implement improvements based on operational data and field observations.
  • Work cross‑functionally with other engineering disciplines and departments, ensuring integrated, high‑quality design solutions and consistent technical standards across projects.
  • Apply knowledge of ASME piping and pressure vessel codes, API, ASTM, and other relevant industry standards to ensure compliance and technical excellence in all process designs.
  • Use advanced thermodynamic, chemical, and physical analysis to develop and refine process systems and unit operations in accordance with contractual obligations, codes, and standards. Prepare detailed specifications and technical reports.
  • Perform other related duties as required to support project and organizational needs.

Travel

  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 20%

Minimum Qualifications

  • This is a senior-level position requiring 10+ years of engineering experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Petroleum Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Proficiency with chemical process simulation software. (Aspen, BR&E Promax or others)
    • Valid driver’s license for state of residence.
    • Proficient with the Microsoft Office suite of software. (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience in some of or all the following industries: Renewable Energy; Gas Processing; Chemical; Power; Waste Management; Environmental Air Quality Control Systems.
    • PE or FE certification or ability to obtain certification.
    • Proficiency in Smartsheet or other project management software.
