This is a senior leadership role focused on driving the external growth strategy of a mission-driven organization addressing the national teacher shortage. The Vice President, External Relations will play a central role in building and sustaining high-value partnerships with State Education Agencies, policymakers, and funding partners. This position combines strategic business development, relationship management, and advocacy to expand impact across multiple U.S. states. The role requires a strong blend of public sector fluency, fundraising expertise, and stakeholder influence at the executive and governmental level. Operating in a remote-first environment, the leader will shape both new market entry and long-term funding stability. This is a high-visibility opportunity to directly influence organizational growth, reputation, and long-term sustainability while advancing educational equity nationwide.

Accountabilities

The Vice President, External Relations is responsible for leading the organization’s external growth, funding strategy, and high-level partnership development across public and private stakeholders. This includes driving expansion into new states, maintaining existing contracts, and elevating organizational visibility among key decision-makers.

  • Lead business development efforts in new states (approx. 50%), including building pipelines, securing initial meetings, developing partnership strategies, and establishing systems to track legislative and budget opportunities.
  • Strengthen organizational reputation and influence (approx. 10%) by increasing visibility among policymakers, advocacy groups, and industry stakeholders through conferences, speaking engagements, and strategic outreach.
  • Oversee renewal and expansion of existing funding relationships (approx. 25%), ensuring contract continuity, managing retention strategy, and supporting efforts to maintain or increase legislated funding.
  • Drive foundation fundraising efforts (approx. 15%) to secure grants supporting operations, special initiatives, and public-sector partnership development.
  • Potentially oversee or coordinate external consultants such as lobbyists to support funding and policy strategy where needed.
  • Build and maintain a structured system for tracking opportunities, renewals, and stakeholder engagement across all funding channels.
Requirements

The ideal candidate brings strong experience in relationship-driven business development, public-sector engagement, and mission-aligned fundraising, combined with exceptional communication and strategic thinking skills.

  • 3+ years of experience in partnership development, external relations, or fundraising within nonprofit, government, or mission-driven organizations.
  • Proven ability to build and sustain high-level relationships with policymakers, education leaders, funders, and advocacy organizations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience producing persuasive materials such as grant proposals, reports, and strategic messaging.
  • Demonstrated success in securing funding from foundations and/or managing revenue-generating partnerships is strongly preferred.
  • Strategic mindset with the ability to manage reputation, influence stakeholders, and identify growth opportunities in complex systems.
  • Deep commitment to educational equity and alignment with a mission focused on expanding access to the teaching profession.
  • Cultural competence and the ability to engage thoughtfully in conversations around diversity, equity, and inclusion across varied communities.
