About the Role
The Occupational Therapist is an independent contractor position that reports to the General Manager and/or designate and works with the clinical team. This role assesses, plans and implements therapy to ensure that all persons served receive a person centered approach to their care and wellbeing.
Practices in accordance with the standards of professional practice and code of ethics, as outlined by the Provincial College of Occupational Therapists, as well as, the vision and values of the organization.
Responsibilities
Include but not limited to;
- Be an engaged collaborative team player, developing and maintaining professional relationships that support and strengthen the organizational culture and purpose.
- Complies with all the regulations under the Provincial Health Authority Standards and Regulations.
- Assist residents improve their ability to perform tasks in their daily living through advising on specialist equipment or suite modifications to assist with daily activities such as washing, dressing and eating meals.
- Participates in the assessment of each resident’s functional abilities and in cooperation with other members of the multidisciplinary team, plans, implements, and evaluates the resident’s care plan.
- Completes MDS assessment on admission and quarterly or as required.
- Reviews treatment periodically, evaluates progress and modifies the treatment as appropriate.
- Acts as a subject matter expert to nursing staff regarding occupational therapy needs for residents.
- Gives direction to the Rehabilitation Aide where applicable based on treatment and reviews resident plans and progress on an ongoing basis. In the absence of Rehabilitation Aides provides the O.T provides the treatment to residents.
- Maintains resident occupation therapy records in keeping with the community and legislated standards.
- Assists in development, maintenance and evaluation of Quality Assurance Programs.
- Maintains a safe environment for residents, family and staff, through:
- accident prevention,
- knowledge of emergency procedures and regulations,
- the safe use of supplies and equipment and reporting when repairs are necessary, and
- Utilizing infection control procedures
- Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelor degree in Occupational Therapy or Rehabilitation Sciences from a recognized program. 1 year of post-graduate experience in Occupational therapy in geriatrics preferred.
- Current and ongoing registration with the Provincial College of Occupational Therapists.
- Broad knowledge of Occupational Therapy theory and practice within a client and family centered model of care.
- Demonstrated ability to establish workload priorities in collaboration with others in a complex health care environment.
- All successful applicants must pass the vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check applicable to Provincial guidelines.
- Ability to push, pull, stoop, crouch, lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Must be able to work with cleaners, detergents and other cleaning equipment.
- Ability to read, write and speak English proficiently and understand verbal and written instructions.
- Good interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Intermediate computer skills including Word, Publisher, and Outlook.
