About This Position
Strata Networks is seeking an experienced Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) Operator to join our construction team. This role is ideal for someone looking to build a long-term career—not just a job—while working on critical telecommunications and Fiber-to-the-Premise (FTTP) infrastructure projects. Candidates must be comfortable drilling in a variety of ground conditions, including rock and cobble.
Job PurposeThe Directional Bore Machine Operator performs a wide range of duties related to the construction, installation, and maintenance of Strata’s telecommunications and fiber networks.Key ResponsibilitiesOperate and maintain directional bore machines ranging from JT10 to AT40, along with related equipmentPerform daily inspections and routine maintenance to ensure safe operationSafely place conduit and cable in accordance with Strata standards and specificationsMaintain jobsite safety for crew members, the public, and the surrounding infrastructureLoad, haul, and transport equipment and materials in compliance with DOT and UDOT regulationsAccurately read and interpret construction plans and provide clear project redlinesCommunicate regularly with supervisors and team members on project statusMaintain company equipment, vehicles, tools, and work areasPerform additional duties as assigned by the Construction SupervisorQualificationsMinimum 3 years of experience operating directional bore machines (HDD)Strong knowledge of HDD techniques, ground conditions, and locating practicesActive CDL with a clean driving recordAbility to safely operate heavy and power-driven equipmentAbility to interpret construction drawings and plansWillingness to perform hands-on labor as needed (shoveling, hydro-vac use, conduit placement)Strong communication skills, both verbal and writtenBasic computer skillsProven problem-solving ability and attention to detailAbility to work independently or as part of a teamMust be able to pass a drug screeningWorking ConditionsOutdoor work in all weather conditionsIrregular hours, including on-call, weekends, holidays, and occasional out-of-town workLong shifts during peak construction season (typically 10–15 hours per day)High-traffic roadways and active construction sitesPhysical RequirementsAbility to lift 100+ poundsPerform strenuous physical labor dailyEnter and exit trenches, manholes, vaults, and confined spacesOperate hand tools and heavy machinery safelyScan to Apply
