Function of Position:

The Healthy Hero Camp at Monroe Community College provides daily academic enrichment programs to help reduce summer learning loss and build academic skills for approximately 750+ students in the Rochester City School District from age 5 to 12 years old. This program also offers a wide variety of activities, such as swimming, basketball, ropes, lacrosse and participation in our Project Adventure High and Low Ropes course.

We will be hiring a variety of staff to work with our campers for summer 2026. Camp is a 5 day a week event, running from 7:45am to 4:15pm. Camp operates from June 29, 2026 to July 31, 2026. Applicants must be willing and able to work all camp days to be successfully considered for a position. Mandatory Orientation held on Saturday,

  • Math Teachers and Student Teachers
  • Music Teachers and Student Teachers
  • Health Teachers and Student Teachers
  • Lifeguards and Swimming Instructors

Staff are responsible for supporting and participating in core programs and experiences for children in a small group setting. They will be responsible for the general safety and development, growth, and skill achievement of the participants in their group. The incumbent will participate in high quality outdoor educational and recreational experiences for participants that focus on the Healthy Hero Summer Camp program core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility, the development of healthy lifestyle skills and supporting the academic success of the children. To succeed as a team member, a candidate should be upbeat, decisive, and responsible. Candidates must be organized, possess good communication skills, and enjoy working with children. The team member will work closely with other team members assigned to his/her group of campers. Staff will serve as mentors to our young volunteer Counselors in Training (CIT) and assist them in any issues related to camp duties.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Implement the weekly camp schedule for your assigned population.
  • Support and participate in a variety of small and large group activities each week. Activities may include crafts, nature, music, games, swimming, initiatives, math classes, ELA classes, music classes, health classes, breakfast, lunch, opening and dismissal procedures, and other events, as assigned.
  • Identify and report camper behavioral issues.
  • Ensure that the site is kept clean, organized, and free of litter.
  • Report any concerns regarding campers or programming to Camp leadership.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance.
  • Know and understand ALL emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
  • Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas. This includes, but is not limited to, being responsible for your assigned campers' safety and location at all times.
  • Develop an understanding of leadership skills necessary to be an effective camp team member.
  • Maintain constant surveillance of the pool area/body of water, know/review all emergency procedures, and respond to emergency situations immediately.
  • Participate in Camp training and mandatory orientation.
  • Ability to take direction from Camp leadership.
  • Ability to work well with other staff members of all levels of camp.
  • Ability to NOT use a personal telephone from 7:45am-4:15pm every day.
  • Complete survey at the end of camp to share ideas and thoughts on improvements for future summers.

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Upon hire, completion of Healthy Hero Camp Orientation and training.
  • Provide certification of completion of Child Abuse Awareness training (cannot begin work without this certification).
  • Upbeat, positive and engaging personality.
  • Interest in working with school-aged children.
  • Ability to assist in the implementation of program activities.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks.
  • Strong age-appropriate organizational and communication skills.
  • Responsible for complying with all uniform requirements each day.
  • Successful completion of all pre-employment onboarding paperwork within 2 weeks (14 days) of receiving offer
  • Staff 16 and 17 years of age are required to provide working permits prior to camp start

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to ride the Healthy Hero Summer Camp bus either to or from camp from one of the six bus stops located throughout the City of Rochester.
  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently

Salary Ranges for Duration of Camp:

  • Senior Counselor = $3100
  • Coordinator = $4600
  • Teacher = $4100
  • Student Teacher = $3600
