Primo Center is seeking qualified, caring individuals who want to make a difference supporting families experiencing homelessness by working as a Development and Communication Associate.

The mission of Primo Center is to empower families to become productive, responsible, and independent members of their community. Today, Primo Center is a leader in providing family shelter and permanent supportive housing, integrated physical, dental, and mental health care, early childhood development, and supportive services to homeless families in Chicago. The organization has considerable capacity and experience as a provider of services to families affected by extreme poverty and homelessness. Each year Primo assists more than 1100 people in high-need communities across Chicago, operating facilities in Austin on Chicago's west side, Englewood on the south side, and Hermosa on the northwest side
Position Summary
The Development & Communications Associate plays a key role in advancing Primo Center's fundraising success, donor relationships, grant development, community partnerships, and digital presence. The Development & Communications Associate supports revenue growth while strengthening Primo's visibility, storytelling, and community engagement. The ideal candidate brings 2–4 years of nonprofit fundraising or communications experience, strong writing and organizational skills, and a passion for building meaningful relationships that advance mission impact.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Donor Engagement & Stewardship – 25%
  • Solicit, record, acknowledge, and cultivate individual donors through accurate CRM management, timely communications, and thoughtful stewardship
  • Support donor retention and growth through campaign support, event engagement, and personalized outreach
  • Ensure donor records, gift tracking, acknowledgments, and reporting meet organizational and compliance standards
Grant Research & Proposal Development - 25%
  • Research foundation, corporate, and institutional funders aligned with Primo Center's mission and funding priorities
  • Assist in writing, editing, and submitting grant proposals, reports, and supporting materials
  • Track grant deadlines, requirements, reporting schedules, and award outcomes in coordination with program and finance teams
Community Partnerships & External Engagement - 25%
  • Manage outreach, communication, and engagement activities supporting Primo Center's community partners and external stakeholders
  • Coordinate partner meetings, recognition activities, volunteer engagement, and collaborative initiatives
  • Represent Primo Center professionally in community-based interactions and partnership efforts
Communications & Digital Visibility -25%
  • Build visibility and amplify Primo Center's messaging across digital platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and the Primo blog
  • Support content creation, storytelling, post scheduling, and engagement tracking to strengthen fundraising and community awareness
  • Ensure messaging aligns with Primo Center's mission, brand voice, and storytelling standards
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Strong written communication skills, including donor-facing and public-facing content
  • High attention to detail, organization, and deadline management
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment
  • Commitment to Primo Center's mission, values, and trauma-informed approach
  • Cultural humility and comfort working with diverse communities
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in marketing/communication or related field
  • 2–4 years of nonprofit fundraising, development, communications, or related experience
  • Experience with donor databases/CRMs, social media platforms, and digital content tools
Physical Requirements
This role requires the ability to:
  • Ability to work on site 5 days a week (Englewood Neighborhood, Chicago)
  • Lift and carry up to 25 lbs. (e.g., supplies, personal belongings)
  • Stand, walk, bend, and climb stairs frequently throughout a day
Compensation and Benefits –
Salary: $52,000 - 62,000 (exempt, full-time) Benefits include:
