Job Overview
The Director of Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) gives administrative direction and has oversight of the clinical practice, operational, financial, and professional development for APPs (NP, PA, midwife) at RWJUH at New Brunswick,
The Director is responsible for the vision, strategy, direction, and performance of various domains to include: administration and leadership, workforce planning and utilization, scope of practice and regulatory oversight, inpatient clinical practice, professional performance, development/training,
In partnership with physician, nursing and operational leaders, the Director provides leadership to meet the hospital strategies, goals, and performance targets and APP workforce needs,
The Director reports to the Administrative Director with a matrixed relationship to the Chief Nursing Officer, and RWJBarnabas Health System Vice President of Advanced Practice Providers; in addition, the Director works cross-functionally with other clinical departments and leaders across RWJBarnabas Health (RWJBH),
Approximately 75% of the Director position is devoted to administrative duties and 25% is devoted to maintaining a clinical practice within his/her specialty area,
Leadership:
- Incorporates RWJBHs vision, missions and values in goals and programs within Advanced Practice Providers
- Provides oversight, mentorship, and guidance to departmental APP leaders
- Provides an experience and environment of patient- and family-centered care amongst APPs
- Develops and manages operational initiatives with measurable outcomes
- Formulates objectives, goals and strategies collaboratively with other hospital stakeholders
- Provide APP leadership on continuous process improvement and maintain a culture of quality and safety using principles of High Reliability
- Prepares and delivers reports to APP leadership outlining progress toward meeting annual goals and objectives, including progress related to clinical activity, quality, safety, and financial stewardship
Administrative Functions:
- Continually assesses all services, identify problems, utilize data to analyze and propose innovative approaches for solutions
- Engage staff and other stakeholders in continuous improvement of systems and processes
- Innovates, leads and supports APPs to practice at the top of their license and develops new models of health care delivery and value-based care
- Maintains current and in-depth knowledge of a rapidly changing health care environment and national APP workforce demands, strategically integrating this knowledge into RWJBH strategies, business functions and resource management
- Develops and implements innovative systems and processes that improve staff and patient quality and safety
- Supports and develop departmental APP leads to implement clinical outcome measures for quality improvement, cost and complication reduction, and the implementation of evidence-based medicine
- Assures departmental-level compliance with OPPE/FPPE and Performance Appraisal evaluations in timely manner for APPs
- Effectively facilitates meetings at the Advanced Practice Provider and organizational levels
- Creates bi-directional systems that effectively communicate information and data to APP staff
- Communicates with physicians, academic department leaders, and senior administrators to maintain coordination with other RWJBH programs
- Manages the complex interdepartmental and interdisciplinary relationships to assure collaboration and that encourages diverse opinion, recognizes differences and incorporates perspectives into process improvement
Resource Manager:
- Creates and maintains a satisfying workplace that fosters professional growth and job satisfaction for all members of the healthcare team
- Interviews to select top talent, matching Advanced Practice Provider needs with appropriate skill sets
- Participates in developing the process to orient ne APPs
- Assesses manager and staff development needs, identifies goals and provides resources as needed
- Maintains membership in professional organization(s) to develop knowledge and resources through networking, continuing education, and participation in national, regional, and/or local activities
- Ensures integration of ethical standards and core values into everyday work activities,
Educator/Research Facilitator:
- Provides opportunities to aspiring clinicians and leaders to develop skills to meet career goals
- Contributes to a learning environment by providing educational and / or research experiences to students and staff
- Leads and/or serves on a variety of appropriate internal and external committees to represent the Advanced Practice Providers
Operations and Finance Manager:
- Actively seeks opportunities to improve financial outcomes, engaging staff in the process
- In partnership with hospital leadership, monitors and analyzes financial data to guide decisions regarding FTE s, staffing and operational budget
- Ability to creates basic business plans, justifying variances and analyzing cost benefit of programs
- Directs and provides guidance to managers to effectively allocate resources based on patient volume, budget constraints, and program priorities, goals and objectives
- Articulates to staff the budget and the context within the organizational financials
Education:
- Masters or Doctorates degree in Nursing or
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Physician Assistant studies
Preferred:
- MBA, MMM, MHA or equivalent preferred
Work Experience:
- 5 years experience as a practicing APN/PA
- Minimum of 5 years progressive leadership/management experience in nursing or APP operations
Preferred:
- Experience in an academic health system
- Experience in a multi-hospital system or integrated delivery system
- Leadership experience in managing advanced practice provider leadership or clinical practice management
Licenses & Certifications:
If Nurse Practitioner:
- Active RN and APRN certifications and licenses, including prescriptive authority, in state(s) of practice AND
- Active board certification as a NP in area of clinical practice
- These may include the following: Adult; Adult/Gerontology Acute Care; Adult/Gerontology Primary Care; Emergency; Family; Gerontology; Neonatal; Pediatric Acute Care; Pediatric Primary Care; Psychiatric-Mental Health; or Women s Health
If Physician Assistant:
- Active PA license, including prescriptive authority, in state(s) of practice AND Active PA board certification
- All Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant applicants must have*:
- Active DEA license or ability to apply for such license prior to or upon hire
- *Active license or eligibility to obtain active licensure in state of practice
