Student Nurse Internship

Job Summary:

The Nursing Student Intern functions under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse. Students partner with the Registered Nurse in caring for patients with consideration of age, developmental stage and cultural pattern. Assists in the nursing process according to knowledge base, skill inventory and within the framework reflective of a student of professional nursing.

  • 6/1/26- Program starts with an introduction to SCH and the role of the Student Nurse Intern
  • 6/8 & 6/9- SCH Human Resources Orientation
  • Expectation is 36-40 hr/wk (including classes-3X12-hr shifts per week) from 6/1- middle of August- then option to remain per diem status with a minimum hour requirement (6 shift x 6-week schedule).
  • NSA is assigned to one department to work under supervision of a RN at all times and share an assignment with that RN (fulfilling the PCT duties for those patients)
    • NSA may be assigned as a patient safety sitter when other staffing is not available, this training will be completed at the start of their orientation, but may not float in a PCT capacity
    • Departments accepting SNIs: Medical Surgical, Telemetry, Orthopedics and Emergency Department

      Schedule of classes with PD:

    • SNI orient on 6/1, then shadow RN for 2 shifts that week
    • HR & PCT Orientation on 6/8 & 6/9
    • Orient 2-3 shifts with PCT to learn unit & basic skills, then begin working with RN
    • Assigned to work with a nurse on NSA shifts, complete skills checklist while working together. Skills and content will escalate with classes by PD throughout program
    • Class content will include debriefing on experiences, didactic education and skills practice
      • Patient mobility & fall prevention
      • Pain management, safe medication administration
      • Peripheral IV placement, maintenance, and removal
      • Urinary catheter insertion, maintenance, and removal
      • Central line care and maintenance
      • Sterile technique
      • Ostomy care
      • Enteral feeding methods
      • Behavioral health management

Compensation: **$20/hour
