Program Summary
SUN Community Schools is a Multnomah County initiative that aligns community partners and resources to help reduce barriers that keep students from being successful in school and in life. Within each SUN Community School, the collective efforts of the school community, youth, parents, local businesses, faith communities, libraries, school districts and community organizations create a network to offer programs and activities to uplift students’ academic engagement & social-emotional development, meaningful family engagement, and resource navigation to access available community resources.
Position Summary
The SUN Reasonable Accommodations Assistants work under the SUN Site Manager to provide one on one support to a program participant based on the needs of the participant as outlined in the Multnomah County Reasonable Accommodations request. Programs are in person, located at school Sites around N/NE/SE Portland.
Essential Functions
- Maintain 1:1 support to the program participants as required to support their successful participation in SUN activities.
- Be able to follow all school district and IRCO safety protocols related to working with youth in school communities.
- Treat youth and fellow staff respectfully while executing classroom management and adhering to school rules.
- Record and report accurate attendance to SUN Manager.
- Provide community-aware approaches in communication, outreach, and engagement with students and families.
- Communicate effectively with SUN Site Manager and parents about students’ success, concerns, or questions.
- Be a consistent and reliable staff member during the entire session of extended day/after school programming. Sessions run in eight-to-ten-week intervals with off weeks between each session.
- Effectively communicate work availability and absences (in advance, when possible).
- Attend all SUN staff meetings and session orientations.
- Effectively work with individuals with special needs and varied backgrounds.
- Understand the role of “mandatory reporter” and communicate any concerns related to student safety to the SUN Manager in a timely manner.
Secondary Functions
- Ability to develop community-aware approaches and respectful relationships with students, their families, and all community members we serve.
- Ability to use good judgment when working with youth in a school setting.
- Experience working in or delivering services in a school setting.
- Actively work to disrupt unlawful treatment based on race and systematic denial of fair treatment through equal access to program practice and implementation. Utilize bilingual skills to support community-aware communication with students, families, and clients in their preferred language, when possible.
Education & Experience
MINIMUM JOB SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Must be able to pass an extensive background check.
- High School degrees or equivalents are preferred. Experience in the field may be considered equivalent.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bilingual/bicultural applicants are encouraged to apply.
- Experience working directly with young people who have special needs as a full participation assistant is preferred.
- Experience with classroom management and student behavior management is preferred.
- Willingness to complete training on child abuse reporting and classroom management skills annually.
- Enthusiastic attitude and passion for education.
- Flexibility in task assignments and schedules is required.
- Familiarity with outer N/NE/SE Portland communities preferred.
- Reliable transportation and timeliness for shifts are required.
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Excellent multitasking skills
- Sensitivity and ability to relate to people from varied lifestyles, socioeconomic levels, and cultures.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Positions at this level are not responsible for any supervisory functions, or responsibilities, but may occasionally be asked to orient and/or train new employees or volunteers.
