About This Position
JOB TITLE: Laboratory Technician
REPORTS TO: Vice President
FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
JOB SUMMARY:
The Laboratory Technician is responsible for the collection, processing, handling, storage, and shipment of biological specimens in support of clinical research studies. This role ensures strict adherence to study protocols, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), and laboratory regulatory standards while maintaining high-quality sample integrity and accurate documentation.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION:
Required:
• High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a scientific field preferred
• Minimum 1–2 years of phlebotomy and/or laboratory experience (clinical research experience preferred)
• Knowledge of GCP, IATA shipping regulations, and laboratory best practices preferred
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Specimen Collection & Patient Interaction
• Perform venipuncture (phlebotomy) and other protocol-required specimen collections
(e.g., urine, saliva, stool)
• Prepare patients for sample collection in accordance with protocol requirements (fasting,
timing, etc.)
• Ensure proper patient identification and labeling of specimens
• Maintain professionalism and patient comfort during all procedures
Sample Processing & Handling
• Process biological samples per protocol (centrifugation, aliquoting, freezing, etc.)
• Ensure timely handling to preserve specimen integrity
• Maintain temperature logs for freezers, refrigerators, and ambient storage areas
• Perform routine equipment checks and calibration documentation
Shipping & Logistics
• Prepare and ship specimens according to IATA and sponsor guidelines
• Complete all required shipping documentation and chain-of-custody logs
• Coordinate with central labs and couriers to ensure timely delivery
• Troubleshoot shipping discrepancies or delays
Inventory & Kit Management
• Maintain inventory of laboratory kits, supplies, and consumables
• Track kit lot numbers, expiration dates, and study-specific requirements
• Ensure proper storage and organization of kits
• Reconcile kit usage and maintain accountability logs
Documentation & Compliance
• Accurately document all lab activities in source documents and/or electronic systems
(eSource/EDC)
• Maintain laboratory binders, logs, and regulatory documentation
• Ensure compliance with GCP, OSHA, CLIA (if applicable), and study protocols
• Assist with monitoring visits, audits, and inspections
Quality & Safety
• Follow infection control and safety procedures at all times
• Ensure proper handling and disposal of biohazard materials
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and SOP adherence
• Report deviations, issues, or safety concerns promptly
