We are seeking a detail-oriented Prep Shop Technician to support our trailer manufacturing process by preparing surfaces and components for painting and final finishing. This role is critical to ensuring high-quality paint adhesion and overall finish standards. The ideal candidate has experience with sanding, masking, surface preparation, and working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Requirements:

Responsibilities

  • Prepare trailer surfaces for paint and finishing by sanding, grinding, cleaning, and degreasing materials
  • Mask and tape trailers and components to protect areas not intended for paint
  • Inspect surfaces for imperfections such as dents, scratches, or weld defects and perform minor corrections
  • Use hand and power tools (sanders, grinders, buffers) to ensure smooth and uniform surfaces
  • Clean and prep metal, aluminum, and other materials to meet paint and coating standards
  • Assist with loading/unloading trailers or components into paint booths or prep areas
  • Maintain proper labeling and organization of parts throughout the prep process
  • Follow all work orders, production schedules, and quality control standards
  • Perform final surface checks prior to painting to ensure readiness
  • Maintain a clean and organized prep shop and work area
  • Collaborate with paint and production teams to meet deadlines and efficiency goals
  • Minimum 1–2 years of experience in manufacturing, prep work, auto body, or similar environment preferred
  • Experience with sanding, masking, and surface preparation techniques
  • Ability to use hand and power tools safely and effectively
  • Strong attention to detail and quality standards
  • Ability to read a tape measure and follow basic instructions/work orders
  • Basic understanding of paint prep processes and materials is a plus
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
  • High school diploma or GED required

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly
  • Prolonged standing (8–10 hours per shift)
  • Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching
  • Ability to work in varying temperatures and loud environments
  • Use of hands and arms for repetitive sanding and prep tasks

Safety Expectations

  • Required to wear PPE including respirators, safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection as needed
  • Follow PPE requirements for sanding, grinding, and chemical handling (OSHA 1910.132–138)
  • Properly handle and store cleaning agents, solvents, and prep chemicals
  • Inspect all tools and equipment before use
  • Keep cords, hoses, and air lines organized to prevent tripping hazards
  • Report damaged tools or unsafe conditions immediately
  • Use proper lifting techniques for heavy trailer components
  • Be aware of moving trailers, forklifts, and overhead cranes
  • Maintain a clean workspace to prevent slips, trips, and falls
  • Participate in safety meetings and report hazards, near-misses, and injuries promptly
  • Follow all company safety policies and OSHA standards

This role operates in a fast-paced manufacturing environment with constant noise, moving equipment, power tools, dust, and exposure to sanding debris and prep chemicals. The position requires frequent physical activity including standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, and lifting for extended periods.
