The Opportunity
We are looking for a high-performing Superintendent – Underground Utilities based in the Portland, OR area. This position reports to the Director of Operations and represents a pivotal leadership role within our management team. As Glass Roots Construction (GRC) continues to scale, you will be the driving force behind our field operations—shaping our operational standards, mentoring the next generation of Foremen, and ensuring our crews remain safe, productive, and profitable.
Responsibilities
The Superintendent provides strategic leadership and management to team leaders and their crews, focusing on safe, profitable, and quality work.
- Executive Leadership: Lead with a positive attitude and serve as a mentor. Provide fair and consistent coaching to Foremen, leading by example to promote professional growth and teamwork.
- Operational Management: Ensure the optimal and efficient use of all resources, including crews, heavy equipment, and materials. Monitor and report productivity rates to ensure work meets schedule constraints.
- Project Strategy: Develop a thorough understanding of project plans, specifications, and schedules. Plan and lay out work effectively, ensuring project-specific needs are acquired before mobilization.
- Quality & Compliance: Inspect field conditions for inaccuracies and cost-saving opportunities. Ensure all work meets or exceeds contract plans, specifications, and industry standards to eliminate rework.
- Safety Oversight: Take personal responsibility for site safety. Identify hazards, implement corrective actions, and ensure all equipment operation and site conditions meet utility safety standards.
- Stakeholder Communication: Serve as the primary contact for clients, owners, and engineers. Maintain strong business relationships through clear and consistent communication.
- Financial & Resource Tracking: Track completed quantities for accuracy and review unit man-hour performance. Coordinate the purchasing of materials to ensure a constant supply of tools and equipment.
Required Qualifications
- Management Expertise: Proven experience in construction scheduling, cost control, and the ability to supervise large, multi-disciplinary groups.
- Technical Proficiency: Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, construction contracts, subcontracts, and technical specifications.
- Communication: Ability to initiate and maintain business relationships with owners, engineers, and subcontractors.
- Compliance: Must Have Valid Driver’s License
- Operational Stamina: Ability to work long hours in adverse weather conditions.
- On-call and weekend availability
- Travel is Required
Preferred Qualifications
- Licensing: CDL A License and heavy equipment operating experience.
- Specialized Knowledge: Basic knowledge of Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD).
- Technical Skills: Basic math and computer skills to maintain complex project logs and reports.
Additional Information
Salary Range: $80,000 - $100,000 Salary, based on experience + 10% Bonus
Schedule: Day Shift: Monday - Friday & Night Shift: Sunday - Thursday
Travel Requirements: 100%
