Getty Marrow Undergraduate Summer Internship - Curatorial at The Broad – Los Angeles, California

THE BROAD

The Broad’s mission is to make contemporary art accessible to the widest possible audience. Founded in 2015 on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad, the museum offers free general admission and presents an active Program of special exhibitions and innovative live events, all within a landmark building designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro. Welcoming around 900,000 visitors per year, The Broad is a bustling public space and serves as home to the Broad collection, one of the world’s leading collections of postwar and contemporary art, which continues to grow as new artists and artworks are added. The museum is also the headquarters of The Broad Art Foundation’s worldwide lending library, which has been loaning collection works to museums around the world since 1984. An expansion of the museum will open before the 2028 summer Olympics in Los Angeles, creating even greater public access.

GETTY MARROW UNDERGRADUATE SUMMER INTERNSHIP - CURATORIAL

This internship offers the opportunity to support The Broad’s curatorial team in developing the upcoming winter 2026 collection exhibition and 2027 special exhibition. The Curatorial Intern will be responsible for conducting art historical research including creating artist biographies and presenting chronological overviews of artists’ work in support of training materials pertaining to the winter 2026 collection exhibition. The Curatorial Intern will also provide administrative support to the curatorial team; they will have the opportunity to gain familiarization with the Broad collection and assist with checklists, labels, and research for upcoming collection displays.

The Curatorial Intern will learn the foundational skills necessary to understand the roles of curating within a contemporary art museum, gaining a first-hand education on The Broad’s collections database, experience in art historical research and exhibition planning, and direct involvement in the development of exhibitions. The intern will experience how exhibition-related interpretation is created, from the research phase to object labels, and wall texts. The intern should demonstrate interest and curiosity in contemporary art from the 1960s to the present and in how exhibitions and artworks are presented to publics through a range of interpretive materials and programs. The internship will also include an opportunity to meet and shadow various members of The Broad staff, to gain a holistic understanding of how the museum operates.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Carry out preliminary research for future exhibitions and related programming including building bibliographies, collecting articles, and presenting overviews of artists work in chronological order.
• Provide research support for the upcoming winter 2026 collection exhibition.
• Research and draft updates for staff about upcoming permanent collection artwork rotations.
• Learn basic training of collections database.
• Provide additional day-of staffing support for Broad programs.
• Assist with administrative tasks as needed.
• Present on work completed throughout internship.
• Approach work with integrity and honesty.
• Support and demonstrate the museum’s culture of developing a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible environment for staff, contract staff, vendors, and visitors.
• Other duties as assigned.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

While these internships are intended for students from backgrounds underrepresented in museums and visual arts professions, eligible candidates from all backgrounds may be considered. Candidates shall have the opportunity to demonstrate their interest in museums and visual arts professions and how they might add diverse and underrepresented perspectives, which can include – among other things – socio-economic status, cultural background, physical or other disability, geographical origin, and/or any other life experiences.

Getty Marrow Undergraduate Interns must:

• Be currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate in either a bachelor’s degree program or an associate’s degree program. Students must have completed at least one semester or two quarters of college by June 2026. Students who graduated after April 1, 2026 are also eligible. (Students who are enrolled in a second BA or BS program are not eligible.)
• Attend college in or be a permanent resident of LA County; and
• Be a United States citizen or permanent resident (non-citizen authorized to live and work in the United States on a permanent basis; also known as a "green card" holder). Students with DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival) status valid through the internship period are also eligible.

Candidates are not eligible if:

• They have previously served as Getty Marrow Undergraduate summer intern at The Broad.
• They have received a prior BA, BS, or higher degree.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull items weighing up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. The user must be able to remain stationary and use repetitive movements of wrists, hands, and fingers while working on the computer. The user must also occasionally bend, lift, and twist.

TIMEFRAME

The internship is 10 consecutive weeks over the summer following the admin calendar (M-F 9 am-6 pm, with occasional opportunities to support events outside of those hours (not mandatory, but schedule adjustments offered should the intern be interested in this). This is a full-time position (no more than 40 hours a week). It must begin between June 1 - June 15 and be completed between August 7 - August 21. There are 3 mandatory events hosted by the Getty for interns, all on weekdays within the timeframe of the internship.

SCHEDULE

Monday-Friday, 9 am - 6 pm, with flexible hours on occasion to support museum priorities, needs, and events. This internship will be hybrid with remote work and select opportunities to work onsite, due to The Broad’s expansion project.

STIPEND AMOUNT

This internship offers a stipend of $7,400 for the 10-week program.
