About This Position

Description:

The Chief Engineer is a key member of the hotel’s leadership team, responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, and improvement of all physical aspects of the property. This includes the building structure, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems. The Chief Engineer ensures the hotel operates efficiently, safely, and in compliance with all regulatory standards while creating a safe and comfortable environment for guests and staff alike. This role directly contributes to the overall guest experience and supports Gravity Haus’ reputation for quality, service, and sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

Facilities Operations, Maintenance & Systems

  • Develop and oversee a preventive maintenance program to keep all building systems in optimal working condition.
  • Manage reactive maintenance and repairs, ensuring issues are addressed promptly.
  • Oversee HVAC, plumbing, lighting, and building automation systems.
  • Evaluate system performance and recommend upgrades or replacements as needed.

Budget, Projects & Vendor Management

  • Develop and manage the engineering department budget, controlling costs while maintaining quality standards.
  • Recommend cost-effective solutions for repairs, upgrades, and equipment replacements.
  • Oversee capital improvement projects, renovations, and construction, including scopes, budgets, and timelines.
  • Build and maintain relationships with contractors, suppliers, and service providers, negotiating contracts and monitoring performance.

Safety, Compliance & Sustainability

  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal building codes, safety standards, and environmental regulations.
  • Develop and maintain emergency response plans (fire, disaster recovery, safety).
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and lead training for staff.
  • Implement energy-saving initiatives and sustainable practices and identify opportunities for green technologies and efficiency improvements.

Leadership, Team Development & Communication

  • Lead, mentor, and motivate the engineering team to achieve high performance.
  • Recruit, train, and develop staff to maintain technical expertise and service excellence.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide regular updates to the General Manager and leadership team on engineering operations.
  • Prepare reports, analyze operational data, and recommend process improvements.

What We’re Looking For

  • Proven leadership experience in engineering, facilities management, or hotel operations.
  • Strong technical expertise in building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical).
  • Knowledge of local building codes, safety standards, and environmental regulations.
  • Excellent project management and budgeting skills.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Familiarity with maintenance software (e.g., Alice) a plus.
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) certification preferred.
  • HVAC certification or equivalent experience is strongly preferred.
  • Prior hospitality industry experience preferred.
  • Commitment to sustainability, the outdoors, and personal growth.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and move heavy objects.
  • Stamina to work in physically demanding environments.
  • Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Flexibility to work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
