Job Summary
The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for developing innovative, cost-effective mechanical solutions that meet customer requirements. This role requires strong technical design capability, cross-functional collaboration, and the ability to deliver accurate work on schedule. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will also provide technical leadership, mentorship, and support throughout the full product lifecycle.
Responsibilities
· Collaborate closely with Engineering, Sales, and Project Management to design and draft tooling, fixtures, and mechanical systems based on customer specifications.
· Create, update, and revise detailed 3D models and 2D drawings using SolidWorks CAD software.
· Correct drawing errors, incorporate redlines, validate GD&T, and generate Engineering Change Orders and complete documentation packages.
· Operate and maintain a 3D printer to support prototyping and rapid iteration.
· Evaluate design feasibility; propose design improvements, cost optimizations, and manufacture-friendly solutions using DFM principles.
· Create and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) in SolidWorks and PDM and assist with transferring data into the ERP system for use by project management, purchasing, and manufacturing.
· Provide guidance, mentorship, and technical support to junior engineers, drafters, and contractors.
· Delegate tasks strategically to reduce design-to-fabrication lead time and improve on-time delivery performance.
· Research and select components based on performance, sustainability, availability, and cost considerations.
· Maintain strong working relationships with fabrication partners to ensure quality and expedite schedules.
· Support assembly technicians and operations personnel during build, installation, and testing of designed systems.
· Assist electrical and software engineering teams during system integration, troubleshooting, and validation.
· Work with Sales to interpret customer statements of work (SOW) and translate requirements into concepts, design approaches, and labor estimates for quotes.
· Follow and contribute to internal engineering standards, processes, and best practices.
· Some local and national travel may be required (typically <10%).
Requirements:Required Skills and Capabilities
· Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, including materials, GD&T, automation, machine design, sheet metal, and machined component design.
· Ability to accurately estimate mechanical engineering effort for quoting and planning.
· Proficiency in interpreting customer specifications, manufacturing drawings, and assembly documentation.
· Expert-level proficiency with SolidWorks, including PDM; experience with CADTalk is preferred.
· Familiarity with common inspection tools (calipers, micrometers, etc.).
· Highly self-motivated, proactive, and hands-on approach to engineering challenges.
· Ability to work effectively on a multidisciplinary team as well as independently with minimal supervision.
· Strong verbal and written communication skills for interfacing with colleagues, vendors, and customers.
· Strong technical writing ability for generating assembly instructions, user manuals, and engineering documentation.
Education and Experience
One of the following is required:
· Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, plus 4+ years of relevant industry experience; or
· Associate degree in a related field, plus 10+ years of relevant industry experience.
