About This Position
The Recreation Specialist is responsible for the development, management, and implementation of seasonal programs for individuals with disabilities of all ages and ability levels. This position will oversee WSSRA's Adult Day Community Cruisers program.
ESSENTAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
1. Develop, organize, and supervise a variety of recreation programs, special events and overnight trips for individuals with disabilities of all ages.
2. Complete program-related paperwork including lesson plans, program evaluations, staff evaluations and participant assessments.
3. Manage all aspects of WSSRA's Community Cruisers program, ensuring a positive experience for participants.
4. Assist with program recruitment and represent WSSRA at community and partner events.
5. Prepare and monitor program budgets effectively.
6. Supervise participants during programs and assist with activities of daily living as needed.
7. Create behavior management plans and visual aides to support participants.
8. Supervise, train, mentor and evaluate seasonal part-time staff and volunteers.
9. Actively support WSSRA's risk management program by enforcing safety policies and reporting incidents and accidents to the agency risk management representative.
10. Assist in the creation of new programs and develop brochure planning for assigned area.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
1. Establish relationships within our school districts and outside organizations.
2. Drive agency vehicles to transport participants to and from programs.
3. Drive to and from programs locations and transport program equipment.
4. Attend agency meetings, as well as for state and local organizations.
5. Perform other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
SITTING: 25 -35 hours/week (at desk, in meetings, in vehicles)
STANDING: Copy machine, meetings, presentations
TRANSPORTATION: Ability to get to and from office, programs, and events
LIFTING: Materials for presentations and events, up to 50 pounds
COMMUNICATING: Ability to use telephone, speak to groups, use a computer and e-mail

Must have a Bachelor's degree in Therapeutic Recreation or related field. NCTRC (National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification) strongly preferred. Experience planning and implementing recreation programs for individuals with disabilities. Valid Illinois driver's license. Ability to work evenings and weekend hours. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to adapt to changing environments and manage multiple responsibilities. Must successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
