About This Position

MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST - MICROBIOLOGY

**EXTERNAL SIGN ON BONUS UP TO $10,000 AVAILABLE**

Entity: Aultman Hospital, Canton Campus

Position Summary:

The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of routine and complex laboratory procedures using standard and specialized techniques, instrumentation, and equipment on a wide variety of biological specimens to assist the provider in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. To exercise professional judgment to recognize, prioritize, and facilitate varying test requests and workload in an efficient manner. To assume responsibility and accountability for accuracy of procedures performed.

Department Summary:

The Microbiology Laboratory provides high complexity clinical testing in the areas of Bacteriology, Mycology, Mycobacteriology, Parasitology, and Molecular (PCR) testing. Primary testing clients include the Emergency Department, Cancer Center, Intensive Care Units, various Aultman Hospital inpatient departments, in addition to serving Aultman Health System outpatients and Aultman Laboratory Services Clients.

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science, medical technology from a four-year college or university or Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technician.
  • Willingness and ability to fill the CLIA role of Technical Consultant or General Supervisor as defined by CAP.

Department Specific Job Skills:

  • Conduct laboratory tests to identify microorganisms causing disease.
  • Perform antimicrobial susceptibility testing to determine the most effective treatment.
  • Stay up to date with the latest developments in microbiology and infectious disease.
  • Ensure laboratory safety standards are maintained.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities & Expectations:

  • Maintain competence in the following testing areas:
    • Specimen Processing
    • Bacteriology
    • Mycology
    • Mycobacteriology
    • Parasitology
    • Molecular (PCR)
  • Assists accessioning as needed to receive and process laboratory specimens.
  • Successfully operates instrumentation in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Performs testing and quality control using approved laboratory procedures and instrumentation.
  • Exercise professional judgment to recognize, prioritize and facilitate varying test requests and workload in an efficient manner.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and department meetings as required.
  • Perform instrument/equipment maintenance according to department guidelines and manufacturer's specifications.
  • Mentor students and new employees by providing a positive experiential learning environment.
  • Is aware of and adheres to regulatory guidelines.
  • Assist Technical Specialist and Assistant Manager with duties as assigned.
  • Cross training in all areas in the department is required.
  • Think critically and work efficiently in high stress situations
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, nursing units, providers, and laboratory leadership.
  • Uses Tools and Tones for High Reliability in order to promote a culture of safety.
  • Accepts responsibilities and maintains an attitude conducive to a cooperative and productive work environment.
  • Adheres to all policies described in the Aultman Hospital Code of Conduct and Employee Handbook.

Working Conditions:

  • Work eight hours a day. This unit requires 24/7 coverage.
  • Shifts are variable to volume of department. Rotation as needed.
  • Work weekends and holidays as assigned.
  • Lunch periods and breaks are coordinated with other staff members to maintain adequate floor coverage
  • Cross training in all areas in the department is required.
