About This Position

PATIENT ACCESS SPECIALIST - ER

  • Expected pay for this position is $17.55-$23.69. Actual pay will be determined by experience, skills and internal equity.
  • Job Summary
    • The patient access specialist will arrange for the efficient and accurate collection of registration, admission, and discharge data for patients arriving in the Emergency and/or Registration Departments. The patient access specialist will also provide general clerical support and receptionist duties to the Emergency and/or Registration Department. All duties are performed within the framework of established operational policies and procedures. The patient access specialist is expected to work collaboratively with department staff to ensure effective departmental operations.
  • Job Specifications
    • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Must be a high school graduate. Previous medical receptionist/clerical experience or a background in general office work preferred. Typing/keyboarding experience required with a minimum of 35 wpm. A registration clerk must successfully complete the designated orientation program for this position.
      JOB KNOWLEDGE: Must have knowledge of the following: medical terminology, all technical equipment used, and knowledge of hospital and departmental policies and procedures. The patient populations must be considered when assessing job knowledge required from the employee.

      • Must be able to use tact, courtesy, and diplomacy when dealing with employees, supervisors, doctors, patients and the general public.
      • Must have the ability to express thoughts in clear and concise terms, both verbal and written.
      • Must have the ability to apply critical thinking skills to assess a situation and summon appropriate help when needed.
      • Must have the ability to follow processes and techniques necessary to follow policies and procedures to ensure standards of care.
      • Must be interested in all aspects of maintaining a general business office setting.
      • Must have the ability to work with a variety of patients of all populations (e.g. developmentally appropriate care, cultural diversity, patients with pain, victims of abuse or neglect, and diagnosis or procedure specific such as patient with congestive heart failure or cesarean delivery).
