About This Position
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Wellness Center Assistant provides operational support for the daily activities at the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma Bah-Kho-Je Medical Center Wellness Center. This position helps maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment while providing high-quality service to members and the community through outreach events and health promotion initiatives. The Wellness Center Assistant contributes to a positive clinical and fitness culture by promoting professional and ethical standards that align with the Tribe’s vision and values. Key responsibilities include supporting facility monitoring, assisting with member check-ins, providing administrative support, and collaborating with Tribal departments to enhance the overall member experience and community wellness.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with monitoring the Wellness Center to help ensure a safe environment and follow facility rules.
- Help greet and check in clients in a friendly and professional manner at the front desk.
- Support the response to incidents or emergencies following established facility safety protocols.
- Help answer phone calls, emails, and in-person inquiries regarding facility services.
- Provide information to the public about classes, memberships, and wellness programs.
- Assist with processing payments for services and basic cash register duties.
- Support membership sales, renewals, and the processing of new member applications.
- Help maintain a clean and organized facility including the sanitization of fitness equipment.
- Support community health promotion and disease prevention events through active participation.
- Assist with the delivery of health education materials to individuals and community groups.
- Help provide general health and wellness guidance to clients utilizing the center.
- Assist with administrative tasks such as filing, data entry, and report preparation.
- Support the department policy of confidentiality regarding member and patient information.
- Participate in outreach activities to help increase community engagement with the center.
- Assist with the setup and breakdown of equipment for classes and special events.
- Help monitor equipment functionality and report maintenance needs for repair.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Strong customer service skills with the ability to assist a diverse membership base.
- Effective communication and listening skills to understand the needs of clients.
- Ability to assist with logical decisions and problem-solving in a fast-paced environment.
- Knowledge of basic fitness equipment operation and weight room etiquette.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications and electronic record-keeping.
- Ability to assist with cash transactions and maintain accurate financial records.
- Competence in helping respond appropriately to emergency or crisis situations.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining clear professional boundaries.
- Strong collaboration skills for working with parents, community resources, and Tribal staff.
- Cross-cultural competency and a demonstrated commitment to the Tribe's values.
- Ability to assist in assessing adverse situations and engage Tribal resources.
- Familiarity with local community resources and health systems.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Some college coursework in health, fitness, or a related field preferred.
- Previous experience in a fitness center or wellness environment preferred.
- Basic knowledge of mechanical equipment and general maintenance procedures.
- Experience in customer service or administrative support roles.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to lift and move fitness equipment or supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Capacity to stand and walk for extended periods during facility monitoring and events.
- Manual dexterity required to operate office equipment and perform light maintenance.
- Visual and auditory acuity necessary to monitor the facility and respond to members.
- Ability to work in an environment with frequent physical activity and loud noise.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Successful completion of applicable tribal drug test.
- Successful completion of applicable tribal background check.
- Must pass background investigation for suitability of character identified in accordance with the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act.
- Possess and maintain a valid driver's license with no serious violations.
- Hepatitis B, Tetanus, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap), Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR), and Varicella vaccinations, with proof of previous vaccinations or proof of positive titer. Tuberculosis baseline screening upon hire.
