The Clinical Registrar in Trauma Services is responsible for medical record analysis, data abstraction, and overall data management specific to the trauma patient. Must perform functions consistent with the registrar requirements for Level Three Trauma Center accreditation as stated in the Hospital Resource Manual and participate in activities essential for the maintenance of a Level Three Trauma Center in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The Clinical Registrar
Reviews all data management activities with focus on maintaining the Trauma Registry database through data abstraction.
Utilizes expertise in ICD-9 Coding principles, Abbreviated Injury Scale, E-codes and interpretation of Emergency Medical Services prehospital reports.
Performs first level medical record reviews in the trauma patient population. Collects relevant patient data in accordance with accepted guidelines.
Develops, runs, and maintains reports based on state audit filters.
Provides administrative support to department. Assists with organization and coordination of various trauma related conferences and maintains conference minutes, collect, maintain, and analyze data; develops documents, spreadsheets. May schedule appointments and answer calls.
May design and/or generate trauma-related reports for medical and other professional staff in accordance with guidelines for requesting Trauma Registry Data. Submits all required trauma data to the State Registry in a timely and accurate manner.
Participates in community education and outreach activities.
Provides injury prevention written material to patients, families and the community.
Organizes educational presentations, exhibits, and community events for professionals and the community; and represents Carilion Clinic at conferences and professional meetings.
Promotes programs and arranges exhibits at various community presentations and events in collaboration with the management team and Strategic Development.
Actively participates in quality and performance improvement projects and initiatives.
Education: High School or equivalent required.
Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience with Health Information Management records system, Allied Health Profession, HIM coding, or like experience required for non-credentialed staff.
Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Accredited Records Technician (ART) and/or Trauma Registrar certification preferred.
Other Minimum Qualifications: Must be familiar with medical terminology and human anatomy/physiology. Must understand medical terminology and human anatomy and physiology in assuring accuracy and consistency of data. Thorough understanding of ICD-9 codes; computer applications including word processing, spreadsheet, and medical records database/system; accurate keyboarding skills; verbal & written communication skills on a level to work actively and effectively with medical and professional staff; team building and problem-solving skills. Good working knowledge of computer software including, but not limited to, word processing, spreadsheet, and database in presentation of the data. Must be familiar with access to and use of hospital data/information systems.
