BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB
- The SCR applies ACS-defined inclusion criteria and data definitions to abstract preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative variables, ensuring high data integrity and interrater reliability. The role requires successful completion and maintenance of the ACS NSQIP Pediatric Surgical Clinical Reviewer training and accreditation, with ongoing participation in required education, audits, and benchmarking activities.

Minimum Education: Bachelor’s Degree in related field.
Minimum Work Experience: 3 years in a related job discipline
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Familiarity with pediatric surgical care and perioperative workflows
- Understanding of medical record documentation requirements
- Understanding of standardized data abstraction and clinical data definitions
- Awareness of HIPAA and confidentiality requirements related to protected health information
- Strong attention to detail and ability to abstract accurate data from complex medical records
- Basic analytical skills to recognize trends and communicate findings to key stakeholders
- Strong communication skills
- Organizational and time management skills to meet data submission deadlines
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Accurately identify, abstract, validate, and submit pediatric surgical cases in accordance with ACS NSQIP Pediatric inclusion criteria, data definitions, timelines, and submission requirements.
- Maintain active compliance with ACS NSQIP Pediatric Surgical Clinical Reviewer training, accreditation, and ongoing education requirements to ensure standardized data collection and interrater reliability.
- Perform comprehensive medical record review, including preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative documentation, to ensure completeness and accuracy of all required data elements.
- Participate in routine internal audit and validation activities in collaboration with the Children’s Surgical Program Manager and NSQIP Pediatric Surgeon Champion to confirm data integrity and resolve discrepancies.
- Monitor case capture and submission status to ensure continuity and functionality of the NSQIP Pediatric database and adherence to reporting deadlines.
- Support identification of quality signals, trends, and outcome measures derived from NSQIP Pediatric reports, including recognition of outliers or emerging patterns.
- Collaborate with surgical leadership, quality, anesthesia, nursing, and perioperative stakeholders to clarify case applicability, definitions, and data interpretation when needed.
- Contribute to dissemination of NSQIP Pediatric findings through participation in Surgical PIPS and other quality forums as appropriate.
- Uphold confidentiality, data security, and ethical standards in all aspects of data handling and reporting.
- Operate within a just culture framework that emphasizes learning, transparency, and continuous improvement to support pediatric surgical quality and patient safety.

- Light lifting, pushing and pulling is required for 10-20 lbs occasionally and frequent moving of objects of less than 10 lbs is required. Frequent sitting with walking, standing, squatting, bending and reaching is required. Keyboard/computer use and/or repetitive motions may be required.
