Position Summary:
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall appearance of the Opportunity Center’s facilities, including office, classroom, meeting, and warehouse spaces. This position supports a professional and welcoming environment for staff, program participants, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • General Cleaning – Offices and Common Areas
    • Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors daily.
    • Dust surfaces including desks, shelves, windowsills, and furniture weekly or as needed.
    • Clean and sanitize door handles, light switches, and other high-touch areas daily.
  • Restroom Maintenance
    • Clean and disinfect sinks, toilets, urinals, mirrors, and counters daily.
    • Refill supplies (soap, paper towels, toilet tissue, sanitary products) daily.
    • Report plumbing issues such as leaks or clogs immediately.
  • Warehouse Cleaning and Safety
    • Sweep and mop warehouse floors daily or as needed.
    • Keep loading docks, breakrooms, and restrooms clean and free of hazards.
    • Remove trash, recyclables, and packaging materials from work areas daily.
  • Trash and Recycling
    • Empty all trash and recycling containers daily.
    • Replace liners and clean containers as needed.
    • Transport waste to designated disposal sites and maintain tidy trash areas.
  • Supply Restocking and Inventory
    • Check supply levels daily.
    • Report low supplies to Site Manager to ensure timely ordering.
    • Store chemicals safely in compliance with OSHA standards.
  • Safety and Maintenance Reporting
    • Conduct daily walk-throughs to identify hazards (spills, broken glass, damaged flooring).
    • Report building maintenance needs (lighting, plumbing, HVAC) promptly.
    • Follow all safety procedures for handling cleaning chemicals and equipment.
  • Event/Meeting Support
    • Set up and break down furniture and equipment for meetings and community events.
    • Ensure meeting rooms are clean and ready prior to use.
  • Exterior Maintenance
    • Remove litter, leaves, snow, and ice from building entrances, sidewalks, and parking lot areas as needed.
    • Report exterior lighting or safety issues promptly.
  • Other Duties as Assigned
    • Support special projects or facility needs at the direction of the Site Manager.
Performance Expectations:
  • Maintain a consistent cleaning schedule that ensures all office, warehouse, and common areas remain safe and presentable throughout the day.
  • Respond promptly (within 24 hours or sooner) to urgent cleaning needs, spills, or safety hazards.
  • Complete assigned tasks independently, on time, and with minimal need for follow-up.
  • Demonstrate proper use of equipment and chemicals, with zero safety violations.
  • Keep supply inventory organized and maintain accurate communication regarding restocking needs.
  • Exhibit professionalism and respect when working around staff, program participants, and visitors.
  • Meet or exceed monthly inspections/checklists completed by the Site Manager.
Qualifications:
  • Previous custodial, janitorial, or building maintenance experience preferred.
  • Ability to operate cleaning equipment such as vacuums, floor buffers, and carpet cleaners.
  • Knowledge of safe handling of cleaning chemicals (OSHA standards preferred).
  • Attention to detail with the ability to work independently and efficiently.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds, bend, stoop, climb ladders, and stand/walk for extended periods.

  • Duties performed in both office and warehouse settings.
  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, varying temperatures, and occasional outdoor conditions.
