About This Position
The Virginia Office of Education Economics (VOEE) is seeking a summer intern (10 weeks) to support research and evaluation efforts. VOEE's intern will participate in ongoing and novel projects evaluating education and workforce alignment in the Commonwealth. A successful candidate will have a strong interest in education and workforce topics and prior exposure to or training in data cleaning and analytical methods. Interns will complete a project and develop a presentation to be shared with staff at the end of the internship. They will be part of an organization-wide cohort, providing networking and professional development opportunities throughout the summer.
Samples of work the intern may support include the following:
- Analyze labor market demand for new degree programs: Create profile reports, in partnership with the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), to provide institutions with labor market data that includes projected job openings, degree production by other institutions offering similar programs, and the top skills needed to identify demand for new programs.
- Assess performance of statewide internship program: Support the analyses of goals and metrics for a statewide internship program and participate in the assessment of institution readiness to support internships and work-based learning activities at higher education institutions.
Duties:
- Conduct reviews of relevant studies and materials to enhance VOEE’s knowledge base. For example, the Intern may review other state efforts related to education and/or workforce programs.
- Assist with projects related to education and workforce alignment as identified by the supervisor or Executive Director. This may include obtaining, cleaning, and analyzing quantitative datasets or coding and analyzing qualitative data.
- Assist with written reports and presentations summarizing findings and provide informed suggestions to drive data driven practices within the Office.
Knowledge and Skills Required:
- Interest in workforce and education topics
- Exposure to or training in at least one analytical tool or programming language, including Microsoft Excel, Python, Tableau, and/or SQL
- Ability to think analytically
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Qualifications Preferred:
Pursuit of a bachelor’s or graduate degree in social science (e.g., economics, public policy, political science, or sociology), mathematics, data analytics, or a related field is preferred.
This position will be full-time, hybrid – working a minimum of 40 hours per week: 24 hours per week (3 days: typically, Monday-Wednesday) in our Richmond office and up to 16 hours per week (2 days) from home.

Salary: Undergrad Students - $15 per hour, Graduate Students - $17 per hour
