JOB OVERVIEW: VEGETATION CONTROL (VC) TECHNICIAN (POLE CLEARING)
The Vegetation Control (VC) Technician supports ArborWorks’ vegetation management operations by performing field‑based vegetation control, access clearing, and support activities in utility rights‑of‑way and other managed areas. This role contributes to safe, reliable, and compliant vegetation conditions by assisting with manual clearing, inspections, and documentation activities.
The VC Technician role is physically demanding and safety‑sensitive, requiring work in outdoor environments, use of hand tools and mobile technology, and adherence to established safety practices. Work assignments may vary based on operational and client needs.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:Operations & Vegetation Support:
- Perform manual vegetation control and pole clearing in utility rights‑of‑way, around power poles, and within managed work zones
- Clear brush and grass to bare mineral soil at the base of power poles using weedeaters, chainsaws, and hand tools
- Apply herbicides to cleared areas following vegetation removal, in accordance with company procedures, training, and applicable regulations
- Conduct pre‑inspection of power poles to assess vegetation conditions and access requirements prior to clearing activities
- Follow power lines through rough, uneven, or undeveloped terrain to perform assigned vegetation control work
- Assist with maintaining vegetation clearances to support access, safety, and operational requirements
- Perform work in proximity to active utility infrastructure while following all required safety guidelines
- Travel to and work at various field locations, including remote or rugged areas, as assigned
Inspection & Documentation Support:
- Conduct basic field observations and note vegetation conditions as directed
- Use tablets, phones, or other mobile devices to enter data and complete required documentation
- Accurately record work completed and observations in accordance with company and client standards
Safety & Compliance:
- Comply with all company safety programs, field procedures, and job‑specific requirements
- Participate in daily safety meetings, tailboards, and required training
- Use required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times
Team & Operational Support:
- Work independently or as part of a field crew
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members
Perform additional vegetation management‑related duties within the scope of the position, as assigned
REQUIREMENT & QUALIFICATIONS
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid Driver’s License (Class C or equivalent, as required by assignment)
- Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid Certification within a designated period, if required
- Ability to obtain and maintain any required licenses, certifications, or credentials related to vegetation control or herbicide application, as applicable by assignment and regulation.
Experience & Skills
- Ability to use basic electronic devices (tablets, phones, or computers) for data input
- Ability to follow instructions, safety rules, and standard operating procedures
- Dependable, safety‑conscious, and capable of working in a field environment
- Ability and willingness to apply herbicides safely following company training and applicable regulations
Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform manual labor outdoors in varying environmental conditions
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull equipment and materials that may exceed 50 pounds
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb over uneven terrain, and work extended hours as needed
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Prior experience in vegetation management, right‑of‑way work, forestry, or utility support
- Familiarity with field‑based operations, inspections, or utility environments
- Experience working in physically demanding, safety‑sensitive roles
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Primarily outdoor, field‑based work
- Exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind
- Work on uneven terrain, roadside areas, and remote locations
- Extended periods of standing, walking, and physical exertion
- Use of hand tools and equipment, including materials weighing more than 50 pounds
- Travel to field locations as required by operational needs
