SUMMARY

The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) works under the direction and supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist to provide physical therapy treatments and procedures. In accordance with state laws, the PTA may assist in developing treatment plans, carry out routine functions, document patient progress, and modify specific treatments based on patient status and within the scope of the established treatment plan.

Essential Functions

• Instructs, motivates, safeguards, and assists patients as they perform exercises or functional activities. Observes patients during treatment, compiles and evaluates data on their responses and progress, and reports findings to the supervising Physical Therapist in person or through progress notes.
• Confers with the physical therapy team and other healthcare staff to discuss and evaluate patient information for planning, modifying, and coordinating treatment. Communicates with and instructs caregivers and family members on patient therapeutic activities and treatment plans.
• Administers active and passive manual exercises, therapeutic massage, aquatic therapy, and modality treatments including heat, light, sound, and electrical modalities (such as ultrasound).
• Measures patients’ range of motion, body segments, and vital signs to determine treatment effects or for patient evaluations.
• Monitors equipment operation and accurately records equipment use and treatment administration.
• Fits patients for orthopedic braces, prostheses, and supportive devices such as crutches.
• Performs other duties as assigned that are within the scope of the position.

Education

• Associate degree in Physical Therapist Assistant from a CAPTE-accredited college or university.

Licensure

• Current New Mexico Physical Therapist Assistant license (or eligibility to obtain prior to start date).
