Working in a remote, flexible PRN environment, you will collaborate with clinical and administrative stakeholders to resolve coding challenges and enhance documentation quality. The position combines hands-on coding expertise with advisory responsibilities, helping elevate standards across hospitals and care organizations. You will also play a key role in ensuring regulatory compliance and supporting continuous improvement in coding accuracy and efficiency.

Accountabilities

In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring accurate and compliant medical coding while supporting healthcare teams through expert guidance and consultation:

  • Review medical records and assign accurate CPT, ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and HCPCS codes in alignment with documentation and client requirements.
  • Conduct coding audits and data quality reviews to ensure compliance with official coding guidelines and reimbursement standards.
  • Identify documentation gaps and coding improvement opportunities, providing recommendations to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
  • Communicate effectively with clinical staff, management, and stakeholders regarding coding, reimbursement, and documentation issues.
  • Support adherence to organizational and industry standards, including AHIMA ethical guidelines and internal compliance policies.
  • Maintain professional development by tracking continuing education and participating in required training and meetings.
  • Utilize remote tools and systems, including VPN access and coding software, to complete assignments efficiently.
Requirements

This position requires strong technical coding expertise combined with excellent communication and time management skills in a remote healthcare environment:

  • AHIMA (RHIA, RHIT, CCS) or AAPC (CPC, CPC-H, COC, CIC, CRC) certification required.
  • Proven experience in high-volume, process-driven medical coding environments.
  • Strong knowledge of CPT II, ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and HCPCS coding systems.
  • Experience using computerized coding and abstracting tools.
  • Ability to meet productivity, accuracy, and performance benchmarks consistently.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across clinical teams.
  • Highly organized, self-directed, and effective in remote work environments.
  • Commitment to compliance, confidentiality, and continuous professional learning, including HIPAA requirements.
