Department Overview
This position is responsible for providing pediatric perfusion and ECMO services, to include: those functions necessary for the support, treatment, measurement, or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system of the patient. This individual is responsible for operating extracorporeal circulation equipment during any medical situation where it is necessary to support or replace the patient¿s cardiopulmonary/circulatory function and ensures the proper management of physiologic functions by monitoring the necessary variables. Position includes ECMO initiation,resource for patient management, and assists in all aspects of simulation and training of ECMO specialists. Perfusion also serves as a clinical educator for perfusion students. 2-5 years' experience in perfusion is preferred but not required. FPP preferred but not required. Doernbecher Children's Hospital is a 105 bed hospital that has been awarded the Gold ELSO Center of Excellence designation as well as a ACS certified Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and Level 1 Children's Surgery Center. We are the only Academic Health System in Oregon.
Function/Duties of PositionClinical Services/Academic:
- Provide clinical services; perform cardiopulmonary bypass procedures; Intra-aortic balloon pumping; autologous blood processing; perfusion laboratory services; lab analysis equipment; electro-physiology monitoring; ECMO; therapeutic apheresis; VADs; maintain appropriate medical records and ensure timely documentation; maintain physician preference protocols; help maintain all equipment in operating order; teach house staff, nurses, perfusion and medical students and residents
Operational/Quality Activities:
- follows perfusion department policy and procedure manual; ensure compliance with all OHSU policies and procedures; promotes excellence customer service and satisfaction; promote cost-efficient operations and support product standardization efforts; assists in POC and other quality improvement activities; other duties as assigned.
Research:
- participates in research activities; coordinate data collection
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- supervises perfusion students and RT/RN ECMO Specialists
Required Qualifications
- The perfusionist must be ABCP certified or obtain certification within the first year of employment and maintain certification throughout employment.
- Maintain BLS.
- Three – five years’ experience in perfusion preferred but not required.
- Pediatric Perfusion and ECMO experience preferred but not required.
- Required to take call as scheduled.
- The candidate must be willing to perform research and staff education activities.
Additional Details
The appointee is available whenever surgery needs arise. They must be available for 24-hour service daily. This person will regularly come into contact with the Blood Bank, the Clinical lab for purposes as blood products and perfusion.
