Job Description:
The Secondary Process Engineer is responsible for developing, optimizing, and sustaining metal finishing and secondary manufacturing processes—including electropolishing, passivation, pickling, deburring, tumbling, buffing, and related surface treatment operations. This role ensures processes are robust, efficient, safe, compliant with applicable industry standards, and capable of meeting customer quality requirements. The engineer will lead process development initiatives, troubleshoot technical issues, and support both new product introduction (NPI) and continuous improvement activities on the production floor.
Responsibilities:
Process Development & Optimization
• Develop, validate, and document secondary finishing processes (electropolishing, passivation, pickling, deburring, tumbling, buffing, etc.) to meet product and regulatory requirements.
• Design experiments (DOE), perform root cause analyses, and implement corrective/preventive actions to improve throughput, yield, and surface finish quality.
• Optimize chemical concentrations, timings, temperatures, agitation, tooling/fixturing, and equipment parameters to ensure process stability and repeatability.
• Identify and implement automation or equipment upgrades to improve efficiency and reduce manual labor.
Production Support
• Provide daily technical support to operations to resolve process deviations, nonconformances, and equipment or chemical bath issues.
• Maintain process control plans, work instructions, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
• Analyze production data to identify trends, bottlenecks, and improvement opportunities.
Quality & Compliance
• Ensure processes comply with relevant specifications (e.g., ASTM A967, ASTM B912, AMS2700, internal customer specs).
• Collaborate with Quality Engineering to establish surface finish criteria, visual standards, and inspection procedures.
Safety & Environmental
• Monitor and maintain safe handling and disposal procedures for chemicals used in finishing processes.
• Partner with EHS to ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and internal safety standards.
• Evaluate and implement safer chemical alternatives and reduce hazardous waste where feasible.
Cross Functional Collaboration
• Work with NPI, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Operations, and Supply Chain teams to support new products and scaling efforts.
• Support equipment selection, installation, qualification (IQ/OQ/PQ), and maintenance planning.
• Train operators and technicians on new processes and best practices.
Requirements:Qualifications:
· Minimum of 5 years of experience.
· Bachelor's degree in engineering (Mechanical or Chemical or similar).
· Any lean experience or education is a plus.
· Proficiency in ERP systems (SAP, Oracle, Epicor, or similar).
· Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
· Excellent communication abilities.
· Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
