Switchgear Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Marietta, Ohio
Job Type: Direct Hire
Salary: Compensation starts at $90,000+ depending on experience
Position Summary
A growing engineering and manufacturing operation is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer with experience in low-voltage power distribution equipment and UL 891 assemblies. This role will focus on developing production-ready mechanical designs for switchgear systems used in industrial and commercial applications.
The position requires strong technical knowledge of switchgear construction, enclosure design, fabrication methods, and compliance requirements. The selected candidate will work closely with engineering and manufacturing teams to support projects from concept through production.
Primary ResponsibilitiesMechanical Design & Product Development
Qualifications- Create detailed mechanical layouts for low-voltage switchgear assemblies built to UL 891 requirements
- Design structural components, enclosure configurations, internal sections, and breaker arrangements
- Develop solutions for cable routing, bus compartment organization, accessibility, and maintenance clearance
- Incorporate ventilation, heat dissipation, and arc-resistant considerations into product designs
- Support improvements to existing switchgear products and custom configurations
- Generate manufacturing and fabrication documentation, including:
- Assembly drawings
- Sheet metal details
- Weldment drawings
- Bills of Materials (BOMs)
- Ensure drawing packages are accurate, complete, and aligned with engineering standards
- Maintain documentation required for production and compliance reviews
- Collaborate with electrical engineering teams to align mechanical designs with electrical layouts and bus configurations
- Participate in project reviews to identify and resolve interference, fit-up, and serviceability concerns
- Support Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and assembly optimization initiatives
- Provide engineering support during fabrication, assembly, testing, and inspection processes
- Assist with compliance activities and documentation associated with UL requirements
- Work with production personnel to troubleshoot build-related issues and reduce rework
- Contribute ideas that improve efficiency, cost control, and product reliability
Required Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent practical experience
- Minimum 3 years of experience related to low-voltage switchgear or power distribution equipment design
- Direct experience designing UL 891 switchgear assemblies
- Ability to independently develop and execute detailed mechanical designs
Strong understanding of:
- Switchgear enclosure construction and internal structural design
- Bus compartment spacing and clearance requirements
- Breaker mounting arrangements and compartment layouts
- Cable entry methods, routing paths, and service access
- Thermal management and ventilation considerations
- Arc containment and safety-focused design principles
- Proficiency with CAD platforms such as SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD, or similar software
- Experience with sheet metal fabrication, weldments, and manufacturing processes
- Familiarity with engineering documentation and revision control practices
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced engineering and manufacturing environment
- Willingness to travel occasionally for supplier or manufacturing coordination
