About This Position
SUMMARY:
Performs advanced drafting, design, and administrative functions for marina/dock construction projects by preparing clear, complete, and accurate plans and detail drawings from rough or detailed sketches/notes, contract changes, and/or bid specifications. Develops engineered blocks and standard details that divisions can utilize for pile guides, tri-frames, gangways, and dynamic dock layout blocks. Creates and maintains a comprehensive BME (Bellingham Marine Engineering) catalog to eliminate repetitive design work while ensuring consistency and quality across all divisions. Takes the lead on SolidWorks modeling for shop drawings, weldments, concepts, and engineering plans. Maintains engineering oversight of structural components while allowing divisions to retain control of production release drawings for concrete, foam, and wood elements. Candidates will be required to complete an administrative background check and pass a pre-employment drug screen. Employees participate in random drug screening per our Drug Free Workplace policy. TECHNICAL ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENT:
All candidates must successfully complete a comprehensive CAD Technical Assessment as a prerequisite to qualify for an in-person interview. This assessment evaluates both AutoCAD and SolidWorks proficiency and takes approximately 30-45 minutes to complete.
The assessment evaluates:
- AutoCAD skills: File setup, layer management, external references (XREFs), dynamic blocks, tool palettes, sheet sets, and revision workflows
- SolidWorks skills: 3D modeling, assembly creation, drawing generation, weldment features, and design intent
- Understanding of marine construction concepts and material specifications
- Ability to work within established company templates and standards
- Problem-solving approach and learning aptitude
- Knowledge & understanding of material sizes and standards
Candidates who demonstrate proficiency will be invited to proceed with the in-person interview process.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Creates construction and fabrication drawings in accordance with company standards and design engineer's directions and specifications
- Develops and maintains engineered blocks and standard details for pile guides, tri-frames, gangways, and dynamic dock layout blocks that can be utilized across all divisions
- Creates and maintains a comprehensive BME (Bellingham Marine Engineering) catalog of standardized components to eliminate repetitive design work and ensure consistency across projects
- Maintains engineering oversight of structural components while coordinating with divisions on production release drawings for concrete, foam, and wood elements
- Takes the lead on SolidWorks modeling projects including shop drawings for weldments, conceptual designs, and engineering plans
- Creates and maintains dynamic blocks in AutoCAD to improve efficiency and standardization across projects
- Works collaboratively with all divisions to maintain, update, and improve company drafting standards and best practices
- Utilizes knowledge of various machines, engineering practices, mathematics, building materials, and other physical sciences to complete drawings
- Makes any adjustments or changes necessary as directed
- Prepares flotation calculations for each float module in a dock system
- Creates fabrication details using the flotation calculations to ensure that each float module will attain the designed freeboard
- Compiles and maintains both paper and electronic files on all projects for historical records of all drawings completed
- Consults with and assists departments in determining needs and developing specifications for goods and services
- Establishes and maintains contact with vendors and negotiates with them to obtain the best and most cost-effective goods and services for BMI
- Demonstrates and applies safety rules and techniques
- Performs other duties as assigned or required
QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Associate's degree (A.A.) in CAD/Drafting Technology, Engineering, or related field; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Professional experience with both AutoCAD and SolidWorks is required. Previous experience in marine construction, structural design, or manufacturing environment is highly preferred.
