GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB:
The Packaging Engineer supports the design, development, and implementation of packaging solutions for metal-fabricated and wood-assembled retail store fixtures. This role focuses on protecting heavy and custom components during manufacturing, transportation, and installation while balancing cost, efficiency, and sustainability. The engineer works cross-functionally with fabrication, assembly, logistics, and suppliers to execute packaging solutions and resolve packaging-related issues.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design and develop packaging for metal and wood store fixtures, including pallets, crates, corrugated systems, and protective materials
- Support packaging for knock-down (KD) and fully assembled fixtures to ensure safe shipment and efficient store installation
- Select materials to prevent damage such as scratching, denting, corrosion, and wood cracking
- Collaborate with fabrication and assembly teams to ensure packaging aligns with production and handling processes
- Execute packaging testing (drop, vibration, compression, stack, transit) for heavy and oversized products
- Develop pallet patterns, load securement methods, and container optimization for domestic and international shipments
- Create packaging specifications, pack-out instructions, and unpacking guides
- Support cost-reduction and standardization initiatives through material optimization and supplier collaboration
- Ensure compliance with retailer, carrier, and shipping standards (ISTA, ASTM, ISPM-15)
- Investigate packaging-related damage and freight claims, support root cause and corrective actions
- Maintain packaging drawings, BOMs, and documentation
REASONING ABILITY:
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished
in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several
concrete variables in standardized situations
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
- English; Spanish a plus
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
- Proficiency with CAD tools (ArtiosCAD, SolidWorks, AutoCAD or similar)
- Familiarity with LTL, FTL, and ocean freight packaging requirements
