About This Position

General Purpose The Maintenance Assistant is responsible for supporting the upkeep, safety, and functionality of the skilled nursing facility’s physical environment. This role assists with routine maintenance, basic repairs, preventive maintenance activities, and service requests to ensure resident rooms, common areas, and facility systems remain clean, safe, and operational. The Maintenance Assistant works under the direction of the Maintenance Director and contributes to providing a comfortable, secure, and well-maintained environment for residents, staff, and visitors.

This role assists with routine maintenance, basic repairs, preventive maintenance activities, and service requests to ensure resident rooms, common areas, and facility systems remain clean, safe, and operational. The Maintenance Assistant works under the direction of the Maintenance Director and contributes to providing a comfortable, secure, and well-maintained environment for residents, staff, and visitors.
ResponsibilitiesFacility Maintenance
Perform routine maintenance and basic repairs to facility structures, equipment, and systems, including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, lighting, and doors, under supervision.Assist with painting, patching walls, basic carpentry, furniture assembly, and minor repairs.Respond promptly to maintenance service requests and accurately document work performed.Maintain cleanliness and organization of maintenance work areas, tools, and storage spaces.
Preventive MaintenanceSupport scheduled preventive maintenance inspections and tasks as assigned.Replace light bulbs, air filters, batteries, and safety-related components as needed.Assist in monitoring building systems and report irregularities, malfunctions, or safety concerns to the Maintenance Director.Help ensure equipment and systems are functioning properly to minimize downtime and repairs.
Resident & Staff SupportRespond courteously and professionally to maintenance requests from residents and staff.Address potential safety hazards promptly to reduce risk of injury or damage.Maintain resident privacy, dignity, and confidentiality when working in occupied rooms or resident care areas.Communicate effectively with nursing and administrative staff regarding maintenance needs and priorities.
Safety & ComplianceFollow all OSHA regulations, fire safety standards, infection control protocols, and facility policies.Use tools, equipment, and chemicals safely and according to manufacturer and facility guidelines.Assist in emergency situations such as power outages, water leaks, equipment failures, or severe weather events.Report unsafe conditions, incidents, or equipment issues immediately.

Assist with room turnovers, furniture moving, and setup or breakdown for meetings and facility events.Participate in snow removal, lawn care, and minor exterior maintenance as needed.Perform other duties as assigned by the Maintenance Director or Administrator.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required.Previous experience in maintenance, facilities, construction, or a related field preferred.Basic knowledge of building maintenance systems, including plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems.Ability to follow instructions, work independently, and prioritize tasks effectively.Strong customer service skills with the ability to interact respectfully with residents, staff, and visitors.Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.Willingness to learn and comply with skilled nursing facility regulations and safety standards.Regular and reliable attendance is required to perform the essential functions of this position.
