This is a senior legal leadership role focused on building and scaling a high-performing commercial legal function within a fast-growing, technology-driven financial services environment. You will lead the legal strategy for a broad range of commercial agreements, ensuring alignment with business objectives while managing legal risk across the organization. The role combines hands-on contract negotiation and drafting with team leadership responsibilities, supporting both internal sales teams and external partnership activities. You will play a key role in structuring complex transactions, enabling strategic growth, and strengthening the legal foundation of critical business relationships. Working closely with cross-functional stakeholders, you will help shape how commercial deals are executed in a highly regulated, innovation-focused environment. This is a high-impact position where legal expertise directly supports business expansion and operational scalability.

Accountabilities:
  • Lead and rebuild a high-performing commercial legal team responsible for negotiating, drafting, and managing a wide range of third-party contracts across the organization.
  • Serve as a key legal partner to sales and business development teams, supporting lending partnership agreements and strategic commercial initiatives.
  • Review, structure, and negotiate complex commercial contracts ensuring alignment with business goals and legal risk tolerance.
  • Provide legal guidance on contract law, lien structuring, and the perfection of security interests where applicable.
  • Oversee legal support for all non-investor third-party agreements across the business.
  • Balance individual contributor responsibilities with people management and team development activities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure contracts and deal structures support scalable and compliant business growth.
Requirements:
  • 10+ years of experience in commercial transactions, including substantial in-house experience supporting sales or business development teams.
  • Proven experience managing and developing legal teams or professionals.
  • Strong background in contract negotiation, drafting, and commercial deal structuring.
  • Prior experience in both law firm and in-house legal environments.
  • Deep expertise in contract law, with familiarity in secured transactions, including lien placement and perfection.
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills with the ability to advise senior business stakeholders.
  • Preferred: experience in banking, fintech, or highly regulated financial services environments.
  • Preferred: prior experience at a top-tier national law firm and 3+ years in-house.
  • Preferred: familiarity with data privacy, true lender, and true sale considerations.
  • Active bar admission in California or New York is a plus.
