In this role, you will work at the core of one of the most critical components of modern software development: Git. You will contribute directly to improving Git and its related systems at scale, ensuring better performance, reliability, and maintainability for distributed development workflows. This position sits at the intersection of open source engineering and large-scale production systems, where your work will directly impact millions of developers worldwide. You will collaborate with a globally distributed team, participating in architectural decisions and contributing to upstream open source projects. - Design, implement, and improve backend systems focused on Git and Gitaly to enhance performance, scalability, and reliability
- Contribute features, bug fixes, and performance improvements directly to the upstream Git project
- Adapt and optimize Gitaly to leverage new Git capabilities and improve system efficiency
- Participate in architectural discussions and technical decision-making around Git-based infrastructure
- Collaborate with open source communities and internal engineering teams to align product and platform needs
- Define implementation plans, scope technical tasks, and contribute to predictable engineering delivery
- Test, validate, and ensure correctness of all contributions to maintain production stability
- Represent the organization in the open source ecosystem and build constructive community relationships
- Strong experience developing production-grade software in C
- Solid understanding of Git internals, data structures, and version control systems
- Experience working with or contributing to open source projects, ideally Git or similar systems
- Familiarity with backend development in Go and exposure to Linux systems (processes, memory, filesystems)
- Experience building observable, well-instrumented distributed or backend systems
- Understanding of large-scale systems, storage architectures, or performance-critical environments
- Ability to work independently in asynchronous, distributed team environments
- Strong communication skills and experience collaborating in public technical discussions
