Job Description

SCOPE OF POSITION:

Responsible for all Bed Control functions. Must triage and prioritize bed assignments to facilitate hospital throughput. Reports to the Director, Patient Flow/Staffing Officer

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinates all admission, discharge and transfer functions for bed control
  • Coordinates hospital processing with New England Organ Bank (NEOB)
  • Perform bioterrorism reporting twice daily
  • Coordination of expired patient charts to ensure appropriate release from hospital
  • Update ADT with expirations
  • Works independently to assign beds according to the Waterbury Hospital established protocol
  • Interface with Hospitality Services for clean bed priorities
  • Maintains working knowledge of hospital census and bed demand at all times

· Coordinate with case management level of care determination and validation

· Works in collaboration with Director Patient Flow or off shift supervisor at all times

· Follows established protocols for patient placement relative to diagnosis, isolation needs and level of care requirements

· Receives and coordinates the intake of all bed requests for new requests, internal and external transfers

· Demonstrates the ability to utilize all equipment and programs provided to assist in meeting job requirements and output

· Utilizes reference material as provided, i.e. manuals, memos, policies, procedures and emails

  • Demonstrates strong customer service skills by communicating effectively with patients, staff, visitors and others
  • Is respectful of others and demonstrates a friendly, helpful and professional manner at all times
  • Practices effective time management by utilizing analytical skills and efficiently using work time to accomplish assignments and expected outputs
  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize workload
  • Promotes teamwork by maintaining positive working relationships within a multi-skilled team environment to facilitate department and hospital vision and goals
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude and willingness to help when needed
  • Performs other related duties as required

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge and ability to use electronic modality and various business equipment
  • Must have basic computer skills and ability to access internet and other programs applicable to Waterbury Hospital procedures.
  • Perform automated functions that fall within job responsibility.
  • Strong customer service skills and demonstration of positive attitude. Ability to communicate effectively with physicians/patients/staff/visitors/others
  • Requires knowledge and use of reference materials as provided in a multi-faceted environment i.e., manuals, memos, policies, procedures, etc.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement, time management skills and follow appropriate procedures when setting priorities and handling stressful situations
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Ability to maintain confidential patient financial and medical information and to abide by EMTALA and HIPAA regulations
  • Ability to work in a business office environment which requires the accessing of information from many sources, systems, locations and media. Physical requirements may involve some lifting, walking, bending and standing.

· High School Diploma or equivalent.

· Minimum, of two (2) years' experience in a hospital, physician's office or other type of medical setting with emphasis on registration, scheduling, order entry and insurance verification.
