SMC STUDENT POSITION: Reporting to the Director of Student Advising & Persistence, Orientation Leaders (OLs) aid new students in their transition to Spartanburg Methodist College. OLs participate and take active leadership in Experience Orientation, SMC’s on-ground orientation program. OLs prepare and plan for the event, as well as lead assigned groups during each scheduled event over the summer. Additionally, OLs assist during SMC Welcome Week to ensure new students acclimate to campus and are exposed to clubs, organizations, and activities to support their personal and professional growth.

This position is for currently enrolled SMC students only.

Primary Areas of Responsibilities:

• Serve as a positive role model for new students and their families.
• Attend and actively participate in the Orientation Leader training program.
• Assist with the organization, preparation, implementation, and evaluation of Experience Orientation programs.
• Acquaint new students with campus services, activities, facilities, and campus rules and regulations.
• Encourage new students to fully participate in the SMC community.
• Actively participate in all Experience Orientation sessions over the summer (dates listed below).
• Lead activities and discussion groups for incoming students and/or parents during orientation.
• Become knowledgeable through training on various resources and aspects of SMC that are crucial to new student success.
• Participate in, assist with, and contact students to attend Welcome Week activities in August.
• Performs other duties as assigned by Director and Dean of the department.

Requirements
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

• Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
• Must relate well with students, parents, faculty, and administrators.
• Must be mature, responsible, and display a willingness to assist students in transitioning to college.
• Must be currently enrolled as an SMC in good academic and judicial standing.
• Must present a professional demeanor that favorably represents the institution and department.
• Must demonstrate a desire to learn about the college and its regulations, people, programs, and community.
• Most importantly, must want to have fun!

Working Conditions:

This work will require significant contact with students, faculty, staff, and the community. OLs must be available to work on all the following dates (plus additional training and Welcome Week activities which are TBD):

1. Thursday, June 25th and Friday, June 26th
2. Wednesday, July 8th and Thursday, July 9th
3. Tuesday, July 21st and Wednesday, July 22nd
4. Thursday, July 30th and Friday, July 31st
5. Thursday, August 6th and Friday, August 7th

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to move around campus in extreme temperatures.
• Manual and physical dexterity and visual acuity needed to operate a computer keyboard and handle paper documents.
• Sufficient near vision acuity to read information appearing on a computer monitor, in handwritten form, and printed on paper.

FLSA: Part-time, non-exempt. $12/hour.

Orientation event work hours are 8:00 am to 3:00 pm
Approximately 4 hours of training
Approximately 12 hours of prep (packets, set-up, materials, breakdown)
Approximately 15 hours of Welcome Week service (prep, contact, attendance)
