About This Position
Hospitality Apprentice
Job Summary:
The Hospitality Apprentice will learn all aspects of operating a successful remote bear viewing operation. This position will work on-site at the Kodiak Brown Bear Center (KBBC) facilities located on Camp Island on Karluk Lake on Kodiak Island. The season begins in June and end in October.
KBBC's Hospitality Apprentice is a learning opportunity for Koniag Shareholders or Descendants.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
The Apprentice will provide support in some or all of the following areas:
Cooking
- Assists Cook with preparations, serving, cleaning and dishwashing
- Assist with the restocking of food and other supplies
- Learn and assist with menu planning and ordering procedures
- Learn and assist with proper food handling
Hospitality
- Prepare for guests' arrival, make sure rooms are cleaned, made up and ready for guests' arrival including restocking room toiletries and coffee/tea.
- Guest Laundry if needed
- Manage regular cleaning and restocking of Gathering room, bathrooms, guest cabins, entry way and laundry facilities, guest and kitchen laundry, banya and the wellness center.
- Taking out and properly stowing garbage.
Guest services
- Greet and interact with guests in a friendly, professional manner.
- Ensure guests feel comfortable, informed, and well cared for throughout their stay.
- Assist guests with needs, questions, and special requests.
Operations
- Support with all grounds maintenance including lawn and outdoor activities areas.
- Learn and assist with maintenance of Camp Island equipment-, hand tools, lawn mower, etc.
- Support guides and management with daily operational tasks.
- Other duties may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements:
- Must be willing to work in a remote location for at least 30 days.
- Must be able to regularly lift 50lbs.
- Must have attention to detail.
- Must be able to perform duties in a timely manner, work unsupervised and use time efficiently.
- Must be able to take and follow directions.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact with clients and other staff at all time with a pleasant and cordial manner.
- Applicant must always possess a neat, clean and orderly appearance.
- Must be able to pass a drug test.
- Must be a minimum of 18 years of age
Office Location and Travel:
The incumbent would be responsible for his/her own travel costs to/from and living expenses while in the city of Kodiak. KWA will provide travel to and from Kodiak to Camp Island. While on Camp Island, lodging and food are provided by KWA. KWA maintains internet, phone, showers, power, cooking facilities and diesel heat at Camp Island.
Working Environment & Conditions:
The work environment requires incumbent to be able and willing to work in all types of weather conditions and varied temperatures. Must be able to travel to Koniag land holdings and assets by small boats, airplanes and all-terrain vehicles. Work will be performed mostly outdoors, and under a variety of settings, such as but not limited to, a lodge environment, loading dock, and across campus leaving the incumbent exposed to the elements for periods of time. Position requires incumbent to be able to stand extended periods of time and uphold good vision and hearing. The incumbent must be able to lift, move and carry up to 50 pounds over uneven terrain, and ground conditions. Noise level is moderate to high. Position requires that incumbent be able to use the five senses (sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch) and be able to distinguish colors.
