About This Position
The Accounting Manager oversees the accuracy and integrity of financial records, with responsibility for fixed assets and the general ledger. This role ensures timely close, GAAP compliance, and disciplined reporting in a complex defense environment. It also leads fixed asset and capital project accounting, including aircraft components, engine overhauls, and CIP, while partnering cross-functionally and maintaining strong accounting discipline. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of financial results.
- Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting documentation across key balance sheet and P&L accounts.
- Maintain integrity of the general ledger and enforce strong accounting controls and documentation standards.
- Identify and resolve variances, discrepancies, and unusual transactions through detailed analysis.
- Support external and internal audits by providing clear, audit-ready documentation and explanations.
- Own the full lifecycle accounting of fixed assets, including aircraft, engines, and major aviation components.
- Lead aircraft componentization efforts, tracking major sub-components (engines, landing gear, airframes, avionics) as separate assets with independent depreciation schedules.
- Evaluate and determine appropriate accounting treatment for heavy maintenance events, including engine rebuilds, performance restorations, and structural checks.
- Distinguish between routine maintenance and capitalizable costs in accordance with GAAP and company policy.
- Analyze “Beyond Economical Repair” (BER) scenarios and provide financial recommendations on repair vs. replacement decisions.
- Oversee Construction in Progress (CIP) accounting for long-term overhaul and capital projects.
- Ensure accurate accumulation and reconciliation of project costs, including labor, materials, and vendor services.
- Coordinate with Maintenance, Engineering, and Project Management to ensure timely asset capitalization upon Return to Service (RTS).
- Manage asset retirements, replacements, and derecognition related to overhaul events.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, FAR, and Cost Accounting Standards (CAS) as applicable to government contracts.
- Maintain and enhance fixed asset policies, capitalization thresholds, and accounting procedures.
- Support DCAA/DCMA audits by providing asset roll-forwards, supporting schedules, and physical verification documentation.
- Ensure proper accounting treatment supports revenue recognition, cost allowability, and financial reporting requirements.
- Supervise and develop accounting staff, including oversight of GL and fixed asset activities.
- Establish clear expectations for reconciliation quality, documentation, and close discipline.
- Drive process improvements in close cycle efficiency, fixed asset tracking, and system utilization.
- Serve as a technical resource to the team, providing guidance and “teach-down” on complex accounting topics.
- Partner with Maintenance, Engineering, and Operations to translate aviation events into appropriate accounting treatment.
- Collaborate with Programs and Projects teams to ensure alignment between contract terms, capital investments, and financial reporting.
- Work closely with FP&A and leadership to provide insights into capital expenditures, asset utilization, and maintenance investment decisions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND/OR QUALIFICATIONS
- Expert level proficiency utilizing Microsoft Excel (complex formulas, Power Query, Pivot Tables; Power Pivot/Macros preferred) with the ability to manage large asset datasets and reconciliations.
- Proven experience working with Tier 1 or Tier 2 ERP systems (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics 365, SAP, Oracle, Costpoint).
- Strong knowledge of GAAP fixed asset accounting.
- Familiarity with FAR, CAS, and government contracting compliance requirements.
- Understanding of FAA maintenance documentation and aircraft return-to-service processes preferred.
- Experience managing CIP projects and complex asset capitalization scenarios.
- Must possess a high standard for data accuracy, documentation and version control.
- Comfortable partnering and working cross-functionally across multiple departments.
- Must be a hands-on leader who develops team capability through direct engagement and coaching.
- Must drive discipline, accuracy, and continuous improvement in a regulated environment.
- Must possess strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills while operating both strategically and in the details.
- Proficient in the English language with ability to communicate financial concepts, including complex financial information, clearly across the Company.
- Must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities of an Accounting Manager in daily work performance.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat.
- Must demonstrate safe and healthy workplace practices.
- Must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Must be able to travel within the US and internationally.
- Must be eligible for US Security Clearance, if required.
- Must be able to obtain a CAC (Common Access Card) and not be barred from any installation.
EDUCATION AND/OR WORK EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or other related field, required.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including general ledger and fixed asset accounting required.
- Prior experience in a supervisory or team lead role.
- Experience within aerospace, aviation, defense contracting, or heavy manufacturing strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with DCSA environments, secure operations, or regulated defense settings, preferred.
