Starting salary: $92,500 commensurate with experience
JOB SUMMARY
The Director of Facilities provides strategic leadership and hands-on management of all physical spaces, buildings, and grounds that support the organization’s mission. This role ensures that facilities are safe, efficient, compliant, and welcoming for staff, program participants, and community members. The Director oversees maintenance, capital projects, vendor relationships, and long-term facilities planning, aligning operational decisions with the nonprofit’s values and budget realities. The Director manages the performance of 4-6 property management staff for the greater Hartford region, in addition to the online work order system. The Director will also collaborate closely with the Compliance and Finance departments, and work hand in hand with clinical programs to ensure our clients' needs are always prioritized.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversees daily operations of all organizational facilities, including maintenance, custodial services, security, and building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, life safety).
- Supervises Property Management staff: Facilities and Maintenance Technicians and the Facilities and Maintenance Associate.
- Develops and implement preventive maintenance schedules to extend the life of assets and reduce downtime.
- Ensures all facilities meet health, safety, accessibility, and environmental standards.
- Leads planning and execution of capital improvement projects, renovations, and space reconfigurations.
- Manages project budgets, timelines, and contractor performance.
- Conducts long-term facilities assessments and develop multi-year capital plans aligned with organizational strategy. Prepare and manage the annual facilities budget, including operating costs, capital expenditure, and vendor contracts.
- Identifies cost-saving opportunities without compromising safety or mission delivery.
- Oversees procurement of equipment, supplies, and services and generates RFPs, when required.
- Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, including ADA, OSHA, fire codes, and environmental standards.
- Maintains emergency preparedness plans and leads safety training for staff.
- Serves as primary point of contact for inspections, audits, and incident response.
- Selects, negotiates, and manages contracts with external vendors (maintenance, security, landscaping, cleaning, construction, and security as relevant).
- Monitors service quality and ensure vendors meet performance expectations.
- Supervises facilities staff, contractors, and volunteers; foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and service.
- Collaborates with programs, HR, IT, and finance teams to ensure facilities support organizational needs.
- Communicates clearly with leadership about facility conditions, risks, and strategic opportunities.
- Owns and regularly updates all policies at The Village regarding use of buildings, fleet
management, security and safety, and other related workflows. - All other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience required.
EXPERIENCE
- 7–10 years of progressive experience in facilities management, building operations, or related fields.
- 3 plus years of supervisory experience.
- Experience managing multiple sites or complex facilities.
- Strong knowledge of building systems, maintenance practices, and safety regulations.
- Demonstrated success managing budgets and capital projects.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work in a mission-driven, resource-conscious environment.
