Job Overview:
Under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor, PCC, and Assistant Director of Clinical Services the Medical Assistant is a skilled healthcare professional providing quality care to patients. The Medical Assistant is specially trained to perform both administrative and clinical skills under the direction of nursing. As well as lab specimen collection under the direction of the lab in the Cancer Center outpatient department.
Qualifications:
Required:
- High School Diploma
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program Preferred or Medical Technologist experience
- BLS certification
Preferred:
- 1 year medical assistant experience preferred

Job Specific Requirements of Position
- Able to recognize, respond to and notify appropriate healthcare team member patent emergencies
- Applies specimen labels at patient s chair side to blood or non-blood samples with patient s full name, medical record number, date and time of specimen collection
- Assists with the completion of patient forms ie disability
- Communicates to patients of unexpected waits, giving them a timeframe of when they will be seen
- Escorts patients in and out of patient exam rooms,
- Queues patients into various locations as appropriate
- Greets patient and family, performs appropriate ID checks, and explains all procedures to be performed
- Helps with office clerical work such as MD mail, and other communications
- Maintain exam room supplies, equipment and stock as needed
- Make available the medication list, patient assessment and physician notes on the computer screen for each patient appointment
- Measure and record patient s vital signs in the appropriate section of the medical record
- Notify the nurse and/or physician with all appropriate patient questions/concerns
- Obtain all necessary information including physician notes prior to patient appointment
- Obtains blood and/or non-blood computer labels using Cerner or TDS computer
- Perform phlebotomy and collection of lab specimens adhering to collection, safety and infection control policies and procedures
- Update and record patient medication reconciliation list in the appropriate section of the medical record
