Summary/Objective:

The Lead Structural Designer is responsible for developing and managing the structural design of modular frames, assemblies, and components for the Modular Division. This role produces Revit‑based structural models, fabrication details, and production‑ready structural packages that support efficient, repeatable, and scalable modular manufacturing. The Lead Structural Designer ensures all structural work complies with engineering requirements, applicable codes, and internal production capabilities.

Essential Functions:

  • Develop structural framing systems for modular units, including steel framing, connections, and transport‑ready reinforcement.
  • Produce detailed Revit structural models and fabrication drawings for all structural assemblies.
  • Ensure designs meet structural performance requirements including gravity, lateral, seismic, wind, and transport loads.
  • Coordinate with the Modular Engineering Manager and structural engineers of record (SEOR) when required.
  • Create structural details, weld symbols, connection details, and bills of material.
  • Ensure all structural drawings align with production capabilities, jigs, fixtures, and shop sequencing.
  • Support the steel detailing team to ensure structural intent is accurately translated into fabrication details.
  • Prepare structural sheets for state modular approval packages when required.
  • Ensure structural documentation complies with applicable codes (IBC, ASCE, AISC, AWS, and state modular programs).
  • Maintain revision control and document control for all structural drawings.
  • Work closely with architectural, mechanical, electrical, and controls designers to ensure structural integration.
  • Support QC with structural interpretation, weld requirements, and inspection criteria.
  • Provide production support during fabrication to resolve structural issues quickly and prevent delays.
  • Develop and maintain structural design standards, templates, and repeatable modular framing systems.
  • Standardize naming conventions, workflows, and structural modeling practices.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce design cycle time and improve manufacturability.
  • Contribute to DfMA efforts by optimizing structural systems for flow, cost, and repeatability.
  • Provide technical guidance to detailers and designers.
  • Review and approve structural drawings produced by the design team.
  • Support training and development of junior designers in modular structural design.

Supervisory Responsibility: No

Required:

  • Experience in structural design for modular buildings, industrialized construction, or steel fabrication.
  • Proficiency in Revit and structural modeling workflows.
  • Strong understanding of steel framing, welding, connections, and fabrication processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, specifications, and applicable codes.
  • Strong communication and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced, production‑driven environment.

Preferred:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Drafting, Engineering Technology, or related field.
  • Experience with state modular programs.
  • Experience producing fabrication‑ready structural details for modular or industrial steel systems.
  • Familiarity with modular production workflows and shop sequencing.
  • Lean/CI experience is a plus.
  • Prior military experience is a plus.

The work environment and physical demands required would be representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job, and may include, but are not limited to the following:

Work Environment:

  • May work in varying temperatures; both inside and outside, including inclement weather, heat, humidity, cold and dampness
  • May work in areas with exposure to moderate/high noise levels
  • May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles including dust
  • May be required to work in confined spaces or from high heights

Physical Demands:

  • While performing duties of the job the employee may work aloft, climb, bend, pull, reach overhead, stand/walk for long periods of time and lift up to 50 lbs
  • Frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms
  • Must be able to correctly identify all colors of a color-coded cable/wires and see close vision, distance vision, depth perception, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus

Travel:

  • Monthly travel to the modular facility; occasional additional travel as required.
