About This Position

The SUD-I staff provides services, intake, and input for the development of diagnostic impressions in formulating treatment plans for a diverse patient/client base. This individual insures a safe, healthy environment that encourages socialization, empowerment and recovery. This entry-level position is subject to overtime, weekend, holiday and shift work, standby, and callback assignments. The incumbent performs related duties as assigned. The employee will qualify for a promotion to a SUD II after one (1) year of satisfactory performance and completion of assigned training and meeting required competency standards.

Typical Tasks:
1. Completes intake information on client;
2. Provides input for development of diagnostic impressions;
3. Observes client behavior and responds appropriately to crisis, anxiety, panic or other behavioral and physical states;
4. Assists in formulating problem/ strength lists and treatment plans or formulates the treatment plans under supervision, utilizing age specific considerations;
5. Encourages clients to participate in social and recreational activities and provides direction;
6. Serves as a role model for clients in the areas of personal hygiene, appearance, and social interaction;
7. Provides guidance to individual clients in recreational or other socializing activities;
8. Monitors client status and reports finding to the appropriate supervisor;
9. Observes and records detoxification symptoms and signs of withdrawal;
10. Assists clients with Assisted Daily living;
11. Adheres to policies and procedures;
12. Assists in facilitating groups; and
13. Under direct supervision, participates in limited counseling activities.

Skills and Abilities:
1. Develop role model relationships with clients;
2. Develop effective counseling relationships and apply the learning theory to behavior;
3. Maintain confidentiality of information about clients, families;
4. Define client problems and assist in formulating treatment plans;
5. Chart clear and concise notes, maintaining complete and accurate records;
6. Act as a liaison between agency and community resources; and
7. Act quickly and safely with clients exhibiting agitated or violent behavior.

Knowledge of:
1. Needs, problems, attitudes and behavioral patterns of mentally disordered individuals and substance abusers;
2. Alcohol and other drug and mental health programs and community resources;
3. Proper safety procedures and health practices
4. Substance use disorder and behavioral health principles and methods of relating to individuals experiencing substance use disorder and behavioral health problems;
5. Verbal de-escalation and communication skills;
6. Customer services ideas; and,
7. Client’s rights.

Minimum Qualifications:
PATTERN I: Two (2) years of full-time related experience (voluntary or paid) in mental health, substance abuse, or social service agency, providing direct services for patients/clients; OR

PATTERN II: The equivalent of 15 semester units of college course work from an accredited college in a behavioral science, social science and one (1) year full-time related experience (voluntary or paid) in a mental health, substance abuse, or social service agency, providing direct services for patients/clients; OR

PATTERN III: The equivalent of 30 semester units of college course work from an accredited college in a behavioral science, social science, or related field; AND
Additional Minimum Qualifications:
1. BLS CPR for Healthcare Providers;
2. Possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License; and
3. Registered or certified in the State of California to provide alcohol and other drug counseling.
