Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council is a non-profit organization formed by the Native American Tribes of Wisconsin. We serve all WI tribes by providing administration of grant-funded programs either directly or with sub grants. Programs range from Child and Maternal services to Education to Disability and Elder benefits. Our Mission is: To Enhance the Quality of Life for all Native People.

Staff Accountant

Position Summary

Perform general accounting duties daily for all federal, state and private-funded programs as assigned. Work with other staff accountants to conduct daily functions of department. Verify HR payroll changes, payroll entry and required payroll reports. Process the central services billing. Staff in accounting department are responsible for internal accounting controls (i.e. ensure financial amounts, line items, dates and matches are correct; costs are allowable, allocable and reasonable). It is the primary function of the Staff Accountant to ensure accuracy of work prior to and after posting. Daily attendance is an essential function of this position.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

· Analyze financial information and prepare financial reports to determine or maintain financial activities within GLITC programs and tracks program dollars.

· Transmit all program financial reports to the program directors/coordinators and the CFO accordingly.

· Ensure all financial monthly, quarterly, and annual reports are made to the contractors or grantors by the required dates of the applicable program.

· Reconcile all bank statements to general ledger cash accounts each month. Follow up with outstanding checks.

· Verify and double-check payroll. Calculate deductions and prepare payment for required payroll deductions (i.e. child support, withholding, etc.). File and maintain payroll journals.

· Check program vouchers for payment. Check stipend runs for payment on a biweekly basis. Run checks on a weekly basis for voucher or stipend payments.

· Prepare journal entry and journalize expense to the selected program

· Ensure property ledgers are being maintained, and all property is recorded in the ledgers.

· Prepare monthly central services billing, which includes charges for telephone, copying, postage, space, supplies and equipment and other directly allocated expenses.

· Participate in various committees outside and within the Agency as deemed necessary and appropriate to the position and supervisor.

· Attend all mandatory GLITC training sessions and meetings as scheduled.

· Attend technical conferences and seminars to stay current on technological advances.

· Perform other duties as necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.

Working Relationships and Scope:

Reports directly to the CFO. Frequent contact with other employees, suppliers and public to respond to general inquiries regarding general GLITC financial inquiries. Ongoing contact with federal and state agencies for purposes of remaining current on various issues.

Supports mission of Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council, Inc. Demonstrate a basic understanding of tribal customs, traditions, values, and beliefs. Quality, quantity, accuracy, timeliness and thoroughness of work performed; quality of communications and development of good working relationships with others internal and external to the organization; honesty and integrity in the execution of all activities; customer satisfaction with services provided; maintain and comply with all organization policies and procedures; reliability in reporting to work regularly and on time; soundness of business decisions made; maintain the integrity of confidential business information; stay current in field and utilize that information where practical. Demonstrate a friendly and helpful approach and attitude to internal and external customers; professionalism; and commitment to the job.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Minimum of bachelor’s degree in accounting or business; CPA preferred. Two - five years’ experience working in a computerized accounting office, preferably within mid-to-large organizations. Experience with a Native American Tribal organization and/or not-for-profit agency desirable. Individuals must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills; professional demeanor and appearance; problem solving skills; ability to manage time effectively; self-motivation skills; work effectively under pressure; ability to build positive work relationships with internal and external customers; ability to interact professionally with a wide variety of people. Individuals must be able to follow routine instructions and apply logic in the solving of various computer related issues. Must be able to perform basic, intermediate and advanced math functions. Must be able to work with minimal supervision and be an effective and cooperative team player.

This is a full-time exempt position based on skills and experience, with a salary of $58,240. This position is in our Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin office. This position is not a remote position. The position includes the following benefits: paid time off (PTO) in the form of annual and personal leave; paid holidays; insurance benefits including health, dental, life insurance, accidental death, and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance, short-term (STD) and long-term (LTD) disability insurance; health savings account (HSA), flexible spending account (FSA), and 401(k) retirement plan.
