POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Camp Director, the Assistant Camp Director supports the planning and implementation of daily camp operations and activities aligned with the mission of the YMCA of Montclair. This role assists with all pre-camp planning and camp programming and shares responsibility for the safety, health, and well-being of all campers and staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist in planning, implementing and supervising a developmentally appropriate, fun, and enriching activity curriculum for camp groups throughout the summer.
  • Collaborate with the leadership team to interview, screen, and hire camp staff.
  • Support and co-lead staff training sessions and staff meetings.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with parents and staff through clear, professional, and effective communication.
  • Maintain a clean, neat, and organized environment.
  • Promote and supervise the health, emotional, social, intellectual, and physical development of each child.
  • Create and maintain a safe, secure, and nurturing environment for all program participants.
  • Assist the Camp Director with staff supervision, evaluation, and performance in managing their performance. Fill in with camp groups when needed.
  • Manage and control inventory of equipment and supplies.
  • Work collaboratively with the staff team in a cooperative effort—promoting TEAMWORK.
  • Adhere to personnel policies of the YMCA of Montclair and policies outlined in the staff manual.
  • Assist in maintaining required records and documentation, including emergency procedures, ACA standards, and licensing materials; ensure staff credentials are current and compliant.
  • Perform all other duties, as assigned.
  • Attend required Abuse Risk Management training and adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising members and participants.
  • Follow employee and volunteer screening requirements and use screening instruments to screen for abuse risk. Provide employees and volunteers with on-going supervision and training related to abuse risk.
  • Provide employees and volunteers with regular feedback regarding their boundaries with consumers and require them to adhere to policies and procedures related to abuse risk.
  • Respond quickly to policy and procedure violations using the Y’s disciplinary procedures and respond seriously and confidentially to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and follow mandated reporting requirements.
  • Communicates to all employees and volunteers the Y’s commitment to protect our members from abuse.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA in Education, Child Development, Physical Education, Recreation or related field and two years’ direct experience with children under age 13, including at least one year in a supervisory capacity OR
  • Two years of college with 18 credits in child development, elementary education, physical education, recreation or related field and three years direct experience with children under age 13, including at least one year in a supervisory capacity. OR
  • High School diploma and a minimum of 7 years of experience in youth camp programs and youth development, including at least one year in a supervisory capacity.
  • Excellent human relations and communication skills.
  • Must have strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrate a positive and constructive attitude.
  • Demonstrate verbally and by role modeling a sound knowledge of good practices and of child growth and development.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of the YMCA and its capacity to develop youth. The ability to articulate and model the YMCA’s four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility are essential.
  • Must have a CPR/AED and First Aid Certification or get certified within 90 days of employment, as well as any other certifications required to be a director.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This work requires the following physical activities: climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing and visual acuity. He/she must have the ability to lift to 50 lbs. The work is performed both indoors and outdoors and may require occasional travel to the various sites of the YMCA of Montclair.

HOURLY PAY RATE: $25.00–$28.00

WORK SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week; occasional Saturdays
