This position performs a variety of computer, clerical, and supply functions that support patient flow and the operation of the patient care unit.
I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Greets and directs patients, families, visitors, and hospital personnel. Provides basic information on policies and procedures or direct requests to appropriate persons. Coordinates the flow of information to and from all areas within the department.
2. Answers internal and external phone calls promptly and prioritizes urgent patient information. Contacts physicians or unit staff members as appropriate.
3. Assists in maintaining the order, organization and currency of logs and records and patient charts. Helps ensure an efficient sharing of information within the unit.
4. Processes information needed for a variety of patient services and treatment areas such as, but not limited to, radiology, the laboratory, dietary, housekeeping.
5. Enters and tracks data into the computer system pertaining to admissions, training, and discharges.
6. Arranges various tests and procedures, including, but not limited to, laboratory tests, radiology procedures, and treatments for rehabilitation services.
7. Assists in maintaining proper inventory of standard supplies and materials. Prepares requisitions to maintain established levels. Maintains all billing receipts.
8. Prepares for new admissions and discharges by securing admission kits, chart labels, room labels, forms and checking rooms for readiness. Assembles charts, adds patient’s name to census list, processes diet slip and other admission information.
9. Performs a variety of routine clerical and computerized duties, such as sorting and faxing information and forms, maintaining or creating files, records and logs, taking and relaying phone messages and routine information.
10. Arranges for patient transport as ordered by the clinical team.
11. Keeps waiting areas, conference room and grief sitting areas organized and stocked with information.
12. Participates in training and performance improvement activities as directed.
13. May transcribe physician orders according to hospital procedures.
14. May notify RN of all STAT orders according to established timeline.
Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities:
1. Complies with established departmental policies, procedures and objectives.
2. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
3. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
4. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
5. Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
6. Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
7. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Equivalent to high school plus additional specialized training.
2. Knowledge of a variety of office procedures, operation of office equipment such as computer.
Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Ability to handle multiple priorities and effective communication.
2. 3 to 12 months experience.
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:
Work is considered sedentary. Position requires work indoors in a normal office environment.
