POSITION SUMMARY
The Heavy Equipment Operator safely and efficiently operates various types of heavy construction and excavation equipment on disaster recovery, debris removal, civil construction, and environmental remediation projects. This position requires proficiency with multiple equipment types, including excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, loaders, graders, and skid steers, while adhering to strict safety protocols, environmental regulations, and project specifications.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Equipment Operation
• Safely operate excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, front-end loaders, motor graders, skid steers, compactors, and related machinery
• Execute earthmoving, grading, excavation, material loading, debris removal, and site preparation per project specifications
• Operate attachments including buckets, grapples, hydraulic breakers, augers, and blades; demonstrate precision control for tight-tolerance and finish grading work
• Maneuver equipment safely in confined spaces, on uneven terrain, and near utilities and structures
Safety & Compliance
• Conduct pre- and post-operation equipment inspections using company checklists
• Comply with all OSHA, EPA, DOT, and company safety requirements; wear and maintain all required PPE
• Maintain constant awareness of personnel, overhead hazards, underground utilities, and environmental protection zones
• Follow FEMA debris management standards and federal, state, and local environmental protection guidelines
• Participate in daily safety briefings and immediately report malfunctions, near-misses, and hazards
Project Execution & Documentation
• Read and interpret construction drawings, site plans, grade stakes, and work orders
• Coordinate operations with foremen, project managers, surveyors, and other trades to maintain workflow efficiency
• Support disaster recovery, civil construction, and environmental remediation operations
• Track daily production and complete required documentation including timesheets, daily logs, and inspection reports
Equipment Maintenance
• Perform operator-level preventive maintenance: fluid checks, lubrication, filter inspections, and minor adjustments
• Monitor equipment performance; promptly report mechanical problems, hydraulic leaks, or structural damage
• Ensure proper shutdown procedures and secure equipment storage at end of shift
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
• High school diploma or GED
• Minimum 3–5 years of documented heavy construction equipment operation experience
• Demonstrated proficiency operating at least three of the following: excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, loaders, motor graders, or skid steers
• Valid state driver’s license with acceptable driving record; CDL Class A or B strongly preferred
• OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety certification required (OSHA 30-Hour preferred, or ability to obtain)
• Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening, random testing, and background check
• Proven safety record with no major violations or preventable accidents in the past three years
Preferred
• FEMA disaster response, emergency debris removal, or hurricane recovery experience
• GPS/grade control system experience (Trimble, Topcon, or Leica)
• NCCCO, NCCER, or equivalent heavy equipment operator certification
• Knowledge of environmental regulations, wetlands protection, and erosion control practices
• First Aid/CPR certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days)
I-9 Verification:
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States and able to provide documentation establishing identity and employment eligibility as required by Form I-9, without sponsorship
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is performed primarily outdoors in active construction and disaster response environments. Regular exposure to extreme weather, dust, diesel fumes, high noise levels, and vibration. Sites may include uneven terrain, soft soil, standing water, overhead power lines, and hazardous materials. Operators must be able to sit for extended periods (8–12 hours), climb equipment cabs, lift up to 75 lbs, and maintain sustained alertness. Travel to multi-state project sites is required with potential for extended deployments, extended hours, weekends, and emergency callouts.
