About This Position
Reports to: Area Manager/PM
Job SummaryThe Entry-Level Project Engineer supports the planning, execution, and documentation of roadway and heavy civil construction projects. This role provides hands-on exposure to field operations, project controls, scheduling, quality, and safety while working closely with project managers, superintendents, inspectors, and subcontractors. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, eager to learn, and comfortable working both in the field and office environments.
Key Responsibilities
Project Support & Coordination
- Assist Project Managers and Superintendents with day-to-day project execution
- Support coordination between field crews, subcontractors, inspectors, and suppliers
- Track quantities, production rates, and daily progress
Documentation & Reporting
- Prepare and maintain daily reports, field logs, and meeting minutes
- Assist with submittals, RFIs, change orders, and pay applications
- Maintain organized project files in accordance with company and DOT requirements
Scheduling & Cost Control
- Assist with short-term look-ahead schedules and overall project schedules
- Track material deliveries, equipment usage, and labor hours
- Support cost tracking and budget updates
Quality Control & Compliance
- Assist with quality control documentation and testing coordination
- Ensure work complies with plans, specifications, and DOT standards
- Support inspections and resolve punch list items
Safety
- Promote and support jobsite safety policies and procedures
- Participate in safety meetings and audits
- Assist in documenting incidents and corrective actions
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field (or graduating soon)
- Basic understanding of construction drawings and specifications
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
- Willingness to work in both office and field environments
- Ability to work flexible hours, including nights or weekends as required by project schedules
Preferred Qualifications
- Internship or co-op experience in heavy civil or roadway construction
- Familiarity with DOT projects and specifications
- Experience with scheduling software (Primavera P6, MS Project)
- Basic knowledge of asphalt paving, grading, utilities, or traffic control
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to walk jobsites and stand for extended periods
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs occasionally
