Casey Eye Institute, Department of Ophthalmology at OHSU is recruiting a full-time Comprehensive Ophthalmologist to work with our current group of faculty at the Casey Eye Institute in Longview, Washington and Vancouver, Washington.

This position will join an established and highly regarded University-based practice with clinical, research and educational responsibilities, and will hold an academic appointment. It has a strong established referral base and an active surgical load. The group practice consists of 12 optometrists and 55 ophthalmologists offering sub-specialty services in cornea, vitreoretinal disease, ophthalmic pathology and oncology, uveitis and ocular immunology, glaucoma, oculoplastics, neuro-ophthalmology, low vision rehabilitation, and ophthalmic genetics.

The ideal candidate must be board certified or board eligible. Oregon and Washington state medical licensure is required. A competitive benefit package will be offered.

Function/Duties of Position

This position is under the supervision of the Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, Oregon Health & Science University, Casey Eye Institute.

The duties of this position include:

The duties of this position are in support of the missions, goals and objectives of OHSU and the School of Medicine and include: teaching medical students, house staff, paramedical personnel and the regional medical community; providing clinical care to patients of the University Hospital and Clinics, and affiliated hospitals and clinics; engaging in public service through consultative activities with non-university groups as approved by the Department Chair. Specific duties include caring for comprehensive ophthalmology patients and providing staffing to residents who care for such patients. Clinical practice is largely expected to focus on comprehensive ophthalmology at Casey Eye Institute in Longview, Washington and Vancouver, Washington.


Required Qualifications

Education and Experience: Requires a current, valid MD license and completion of an accredited ophthalmology residency program. Must be board certified or eligible by the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Knowledge and Skills: Strong clinical and patient assessment skills. Detail oriented, pro-active and meticulous in all aspects of work. Requires excellent organizational skills and strong communication and patient relations skills. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact well with employees at all levels of the organization is essential. Demonstrated innovation, initiative, and creative problem-solving skills are imperative. Ability to work well independently and multi-task is critical. Ability to plan and organize technical work and to adapt to a changing work environment is critical. Must be able to assess and develop work tasks and systems in order to optimize clinic performance.

Physical Requires:

  • Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls (specifically slitlamp and phoropter apparatus).
  • Sit or stand while examining patients' eyes.
  • Repetitive finger, hand and wrist motions.
  • See details of objects whether they are nearby or far away.
  • Speak clearly so listeners can understand.
  • Understand the speech of another person.
  • Hold the arm and hand in one position or hold the hand steady while moving the arm.
  • Use fingers to grasp, move, or assemble very small objects.
  • Make quick, precise adjustments to machine controls.
  • See differences between colors, shades, and brightness.
  • Use one or two hands to grasp, move, or assemble objects.
  • Determine the distance between objects.
  • Hear sounds and recognize the difference between them.
  • Move two or more limbs together (for example, two arms, two legs, or one leg and one arm) while remaining in place.
  • Use stomach and lower back muscles to support the body for long periods without getting tired.
  • Focus on one source of sound and ignore others.
  • Make fast, repeated movements of fingers, hands, and wrists.
  • Choose quickly and correctly among various movements when responding to different signals.
