About This Position
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Incumbents of positions in this series operate motor trucks to transport passengers, materials and equipment; drive motor trucks with dump bodies; operate light motor vehicles such as station wagons, panel trucks and automobiles; perform minor preventative maintenance to vehicles; maintain records and prepare reports on such matters as vehicle use and mileage; load and unload materials, equipment and supplies; and perform related work as required.
The basic purpose of this work is to operate various motor trucks to transport persons, materials and/or equipment in connection with assigned agency activities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Under the Assistant Director of Facilities or Designee. Incumbents of positions at this level receive direct supervision from employees of higher grade who provide instructions, assign work and review performance through oral reports and observation for compliance with established standards.

EXAMPLES OF SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operates motor truck/vehicles to pick up, transport and deliver passengers, materials, mail, products, and equipment to designated locations.
- Drives motor truck with dump body to transport and dump loose materials such as sand, crushed rock etc. including securing load for transit.
- Performs minor preventative maintenance to motor vehicles such as checking tire pressure and battery, oil, gas and water levels and corrects minor deficiencies.
- Maintains records and prepares reports on such matters as vehicle use, mileage, destinations, accidents, etc.
- Load and unload, and distributes materials, parcels, mail items, furniture, equipment, and supplies.
- Performs related duties such as contacting appropriate individuals for motor vehicle maintenance and/or repair; picking up and delivering mail; and distributing supplies and equipment.
- Operate snow removal and ice control vehicles and equipment in connection with agency snowplowing and road sanding operations.
Based on assignment, incumbents of positions may:
- Install snowplows and sanders on trucks and mix materials such as sand, salt and gravel to be applied to roadways.
- Operate radio communications equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Motor Truck Drivers lift and carry heavy objects; may work varied shifts and weekends, holidays or nights; may be subject to a standby (on call) work status; and may work exposed to adverse weather conditions.
Job Requirements:
- Knowledge of the state laws, rules and regulations and safety practices governing motor vehicle operation.
- Knowledge of the types, characteristics and uses of motor trucks.
- Knowledge of preventative maintenance procedures relative to motor trucks.
- Skill in the operation of heavy motor trucks, and other motor vehicles such as automobiles, panel trucks, vans, station wagons, etc.
- Ability to understand and apply the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines pertinent to University business and operations.
- Ability to read, write and comprehend the English language.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to maintain accurate records.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects.
- Physical stamina and endurance.
Additional Information:
This is a full-time, non-exempt, benefits-eligible position in the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) bargaining unit with a union title of Motor Truck Driver. The bi-weekly pay rate is $1,706.74 (grade 10, step 1), which is approximately a $44,375.24 annualized salary.
