About This Position
The opportunity
The way software is built is changing, and fast! Engineers who embrace AI-native workflows today will define the next decade of product development. Those who don’t? They will be explaining what they used to do.
At Productboard, this transformation to being AI native is not a side project; it is our entire focus. AI first is our operating model, and this is how we work. We are building an AI-first Product Engineering organization where learning velocity matters as much as shipping. Our northstar: turn ideas into validated learning twice as fast. More experiments. Tighter feedback loops. Better outcomes.
We’re hiring a (Sr.) Staff Product Engineer with strong architectural thinking and meaningful frontend exposure who can help evolve our product experience and shared platform foundations. This person operates at the intersection of product strategy and technical execution, contributing to architecture decisions that enable Productboard to scale. They are a multiplier of engineers across teams, a thoughtful partner to leadership, and a pragmatic technical leader who creates clarity, reduces complexity, and drives cross-team leverage through high-impact collaboration.
Why this matters for your careerThe gap between engineers who are building with AI daily and those who are still watching is widening fast. At Productboard, you won't just use AI tools. You will shape the architecture that makes AI agents effective, define the workflows that make them reliable, and build the evaluation systems that make them trustworthy. You will work in an environment where AI first is not a future aspiration. It is the current standard.
The skills you build here, agent native design, multi-model orchestration, eval-driven development, AI-ready codebase architecture, are the skills that will define senior engineering for the next decade.
AI is how we buildThis is not a tagline. It is our daily operating model across Engineering, Product, and Design. PMs and designers don't just spec features here. They prototype with AI tools and ship to production alongside engineers.
AI is embedded across the full lifecycle: technical discoveries, spec writing, design exploration, implementation, test generation, code review, CI/CD, and incident resolution. Human judgment stays in control. People own product intent and quality decisions, with strong review practices and guardrails that keep shipping safe.
What we are building underneath:
- Agent native architecture standards: clear API contracts, semantic naming, and well-defined module boundaries that keep AI effective as systems grow.
- A context infrastructure layer with repo versioned guidance that AI tools automatically load, improving the output of Cursor, Claude Code, and Codex simultaneously.
- AI agent workflows for on-call and incident resolution: triage alerts, pull logs, surface relevant history, and suggest remediation.
- Systematic optimization of AI code review to catch correctness, security, and maintainability issues earlier.
- Translate strategy into architecture. Partner with Staff Engineers and Engineering and Product Leaders to turn multi-year goals into a clear technical roadmap — especially where the frontend architecture is a key constraint or differentiator.
- Design the future of our frontend platform. Architect and evolve our core frontend systems: UI infrastructure, design system and component ecosystem, state/data patterns, performance and observability strategy, and developer workflows.
- Create leverage across teams. Build reusable patterns, libraries, and platform capabilities that enable dozens of engineers to ship safely and quickly — raising the baseline for quality, usability, and iteration speed.
- Lead decisions through clarity. Write and evangelize crisp RFCs / ADRs and technical narratives that make trade-offs clear, align stakeholders quickly, and reduce ambiguity across teams.
- Guide high-stakes execution. Step into the most critical and complex cross-team initiatives — shaping direction, unblocking progress, and ensuring solutions remain pragmatic and durable.
- Drive modernization of legacy constraints. Lead the technical evolution away from painful legacy frontend systems (e.g., fragmented patterns, scaling bottlenecks, brittle UI foundations), building buy-in and staging the migration so value continues flowing.
- Multiply other Technical Leaders. You have experience mentoring Staff Engineers and helping them grow their influence, scope, and judgment.
- Champion customer value. Stay grounded in the user experience: ensure frontend architecture choices increase product velocity and elevate usability, reliability, performance, and craft.
- Make our codebase AI-ready: define clear module boundaries, improve API contracts, add semantic context, and build the structured documentation that makes AI agents more effective across every repo.
- Design and implement agent workflows that go beyond chat: multi-step reasoning, tool use, autonomous task execution, and human-gated checkpoints.
- Run experiments, validate with real users, and iterate based on evidence. We measure learning velocity, not just output
- Collaborate closely with product managers and designers to shape what we build, not just how we build it. We expect a product mindset, not just technical execution.
- Act as a knowledge multiplier, sharing what you learn across and beyond your team to raise the bar for everyone.
As a (Sr.) Staff Product Engineer, you’ll operate at the intersection of long-term product strategy and technical reality, using your frontend expertise to shape how we build and evolve Productboard at scale.
You are a strong match if you:
- Think in systems and horizons. You naturally operate in a 1–3 year horizon, spotting strategic risks and opportunities and shaping a roadmap that makes the company’s biggest bets technically possible.
- Have exceptional frontend technical depth. You bring expert-level understanding of modern frontend architecture and platform design — from performance and rendering strategies, to state management, modularity, design systems, dependency boundaries, and build tooling.
- Create leverage, not dependency. Your instinct is to make others faster and more successful through patterns, tooling, and shared platforms — not by becoming a bottleneck.
- Communicate with radical clarity. You can translate complex engineering trade-offs into narratives leaders can act on, and can write short, high-leverage docs that drive alignment quickly.
- Make pragmatic trade-offs. You’re opinionated, but not dogmatic. You seek the simplest path to meaningful value, and you know when to build durable foundations vs. when to iterate and learn.
- Own outcomes. You don’t just “deliver a solution” — you take responsibility for the real-world impact of your decisions across product metrics, team velocity, and system health.
- Raise the bar through craft. You care deeply about quality, usability, and maintainability, and you lead by example — shaping engineering practices and standards across teams.
- Multiply other technical leaders. You have experience mentoring Staff Engineers and helping them grow their influence, scope, and judgment.
Bonus points if you:
- Have 5+ years of professional engineering experience.
- Have led a design system / component platform at scale, including governance and adoption.
- Have driven frontend performance strategy across a large product surface.
- Have successfully modernized legacy frontend architecture while keeping product delivery moving.
- Have experience shaping engineering strategy with Directors / VPs and influencing a broader organization.
- Bring product thinking to engineering work. You can articulate why something matters for users, not just how it works technically.
- Embrace AI as a daily tool in your own workflow. You use AI coding assistants, iterate on prompts, and constantly look for ways to move faster.
- Are curious about what agent native architecture looks like: how to structure codebases, APIs, and documentation so AI agents can operate effectively at scale.
